Job description

TechFlow is seeking a Technical Writer / Documentation Specialist to support a mission-critical DoD software development and modernization program in Montgomery, AL. This program provides software development and technical support services to sustain, enhance, and optimize a critical customer system through secure, scalable, and maintainable software solutions.

The Technical Writer will develop, maintain, and manage comprehensive technical documentation supporting the full software development lifecycle, including system design, software architecture, user documentation, operational procedures, and acquisition artifacts. Working closely with software engineers, architects, database administrators, DevSecOps engineers, testers, and program leadership, this role will ensure technical documentation is accurate, current, well organized, and compliant with Department of Defense documentation standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create, edit, and maintain technical documentation supporting software development, system sustainment, acquisition activities, and lifecycle management.
  • Develop and maintain software requirements documentation, business use cases, functional specifications, process workflows, system design documents, architecture diagrams, database schemas, and data dictionaries.
  • Produce and maintain user guides, system administration manuals, training materials, release notes, installation guides, and operational documentation.
  • Document ETL processes, including data source descriptions, transformation logic, report generation procedures, and data flow documentation.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), troubleshooting guides, maintenance procedures, and system monitoring documentation.
  • Establish and maintain version-controlled documentation repositories using Government-approved version control systems to ensure document integrity and traceability.
  • Develop and maintain documentation standards, templates, and style guides to promote consistency across program deliverables.
  • Collaborate with technical teams to gather information, translate complex technical concepts into clear documentation, and ensure documentation remains synchronized with system changes.
  • Support Government risk management activities by documenting risks, mitigation strategies, action items, and program decisions within approved project management tools.
  • Leverage Government-approved generative AI and digital authoring tools to improve documentation quality, consistency, efficiency, and standardization while ensuring compliance with program requirements.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies and support documentation updates throughout each sprint to ensure deliverables remain current.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of technical writing experience supporting DoD software development or modernization programs.
  • Experience creating technical documentation for software systems, system architecture, user documentation, and operational procedures.
  • Experience working with version-controlled documentation repositories and collaborative documentation platforms.
  • Proficiency using Government-approved generative AI tools and modern digital authoring technologies to support documentation development.
  • Familiarity with DoD acquisition documentation standards and software lifecycle documentation requirements.
  • Excellent written communication, editing, organization, and document management skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, developers, project managers, and Government stakeholders.
  • Active Secret Security Clearance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting U.S. Air Force software development or modernization programs.
  • Familiarity with Agile software development methodologies and Scrum environments.
  • Experience documenting cloud-based applications, DevSecOps processes, CI/CD pipelines, and database architectures.
  • Experience creating architecture diagrams and technical illustrations using tools such as Visio, Lucidchart, or similar platforms.
  • Knowledge of RMF documentation, cybersecurity documentation, and configuration management processes.
  • Experience working with Git-based repositories or other version control systems for documentation management.
