Summary

We are a leading Caterpillar equipment dealer serving Western North Carolina, committed to supporting our technicians with industry-leading tools, training, and technology. We are seeking a highly skilled Technical Communicator to serve as a key technical resource supporting technicians with advanced machine technologies.

This role is ideal for someone with strong diagnostic and communication skills who thrives in solving complex problems involving onboard networks, control systems, and integrated technologies. The position primarily supports field and shop technicians and may occasionally require work outside standard business hours to resolve critical issues.

Essential Functions

  • Serve as the primary technical resource supporting technicians with advanced machine technology issues
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose onboard Ethernet networks, CAN data systems, and electronic control modules (ECMs)
  • Provide support for grade control systems, including calibration, setup, and diagnostics
  • Assist with troubleshooting and repair of machine safety systems and operator-assist features
  • Support installation, configuration, and repair of excavator work tools and integrated technology systems
  • Interpret complex technical information and communicate clearly to technicians and service teams
  • Collaborate with Caterpillar OEM technical resources to resolve escalated issues
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, troubleshooting guides, and internal knowledge resources
  • Provide hands-on training and technical coaching to improve technician capability
  • Stay current on evolving machine technologies, software systems, and industry trends
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

  • Required:
    • 3+ years of experience with heavy equipment service or technical support
    • Strong knowledge of electrical systems, machine diagnostics, and data networks
    • Experience with CAN bus systems, Ethernet networks, and machine communication systems
    • Familiarity with grade control systems (Cat Grade, Trimble, Topcon)
  • Preferred:
    • Experience with Caterpillar equipment and diagnostic tools (Cat ET, SIS)
    • Experience with safety systems and advanced operator technologies
    • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Diesel Technology, Engineering, or related field

Computer Skills

  • Proficiency with diagnostic software such as Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET)
  • Working knowledge of OEM service platforms (e.g., SIS)
  • Ability to interpret machine data, fault codes, and network diagnostics
  • General proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
