Job description

We are looking for a Technical Service Manager to join our Chicago Lab in Chicago, IL. In this role, you will serve as a trusted technical partner to customers working at the forefront of quantum technology, helping them maximize the performance of Bluefors cryogenic systems to achieve their research objectives. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a strong technical background, a passion for customer success, and an interest in advancing cutting-edge scientific research. Your responsibilities will include managing the daily technical operations of the Bluefors Chicago Lab while ensuring an exceptional customer experience. You will work closely with customers to understand their technical requirements, provide expert guidance on the operation and optimization of Bluefors cryostat systems, and support the development of customized technical solutions. In this role, you will provide technical sales support, contribute to the continued development of Bluefors' laboratory service offerings, and build strong relationships with quantum technology companies, universities, and research organizations. You will collaborate with Production, Research & Development, Planning, and external suppliers to deliver comprehensive technical support throughout the customer journey. Additionally, you will oversee laboratory business operations while ensuring compliance with quality, environmental, health, and safety standards, continuously improve laboratory infrastructure, and represent Bluefors at customer sites and industry events.

We are looking for a candidate with a Master's or Ph.D. degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering, or a related technical field, along with demonstrated knowledge of quantum technology and cryogenic systems. The ideal candidate will have experience executing measurements on Bluefors systems, hands-on knowledge of dilution refrigerators, and familiarity with millikelvin (mK) measurement applications such as superconducting quantum circuits, quantum dots, ultralow temperature detectors, or closely related technologies. You should possess excellent technical problem-solving abilities, strong communication and customer relationship skills, and the ability to interpret technical drawings. Experience with ERP and/or CRM systems is beneficial, along with the ability to travel and represent Bluefors professionally at customer meetings and industry events.

Salary Range: $110,000 – $150,000 annually

Main Responsibilities include the following:

  • Manage the daily technical operations of the Bluefors Chicago Lab

  • Serve as the primary technical contact for customers utilizing Bluefors laboratory services

  • Provide technical sales support by aligning Bluefors Lab capabilities with customer requirements

  • Develop and expand the Bluefors laboratory service concept

  • Build relationships with quantum technology companies, universities, and research organizations

  • Collaborate with Production, R&D, Planning, and suppliers to deliver technical solutions

  • Assist customers in optimizing cryogenic measurement setups

  • Serve as a technical consultant while customers configure and execute measurements

  • Continuously improve laboratory infrastructure and operational processes

  • Ensure compliance with Quality, Environmental, Health, and Safety (QEHS) standards

  • Represent Bluefors at customer meetings, conferences, and industry events

  • Support business development initiatives and laboratory growth

What We Expect from You

  • Master's or Ph.D. degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering, or a related technical field

  • Strong knowledge of quantum technology and cryogenic measurement systems

  • Evidence of strong technical capabilities through research, publications, projects, or internships

  • Minimum of 1–2 years of experience executing measurements on Bluefors systems

  • Hands-on experience with dilution refrigerators

  • Experimental knowledge of at least one millikelvin (mK) measurement application, including:

    • Superconducting quantum circuits

    • Quantum dots

    • Ultralow temperature detectors

    • Other closely related cryogenic research applications

  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and engineering documentation

  • Experience with ERP and/or CRM systems preferred

  • Strong customer service and technical consulting skills

  • Ability to work in the United States

  • Willingness to travel and represent Bluefors at customer sites and industry events

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

  • Excellent command of English, both written and spoken

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and use hands and fingers to operate laboratory equipment and computer systems. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Regular travel to customer locations and industry events may be required.

Work Environment

This position operates primarily in a laboratory and professional office environment while interacting regularly with customers, researchers, and internal teams. The role involves the operation of advanced cryogenic systems and laboratory equipment and may occasionally require work around moving mechanical equipment and other laboratory hazards. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn when required.
