What is technical recruiting?

Technical recruiting is the process of finding, attracting, and hiring candidates for technology-focused positions such as software engineers, data scientists, IT specialists, and other roles that require specialized technical skills. Technical recruiters work closely with hiring managers to understand job requirements, source qualified candidates, conduct interviews, and manage the hiring process. They often use specialized tools and platforms to reach candidates with the right technical expertise, and must stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies.

How does a technical recruiter typically collaborate with engineering teams during the hiring process?

Technical Recruiters work closely with engineering managers and technical leads to understand the specific skill sets and experience required for each role. They often participate in intake meetings to clarify job requirements, and they may join calibration sessions to align on candidate evaluation criteria. Throughout the process, Technical Recruiters coordinate interviews, gather feedback from engineering staff, and help facilitate decision-making meetings. This close collaboration ensures that only candidates who meet both technical and cultural needs move forward, and it helps foster a streamlined, transparent hiring process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical recruiter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Recruiter, you need a solid understanding of technical roles and requirements, strong sourcing abilities, and typically a background in human resources or recruiting. Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS), LinkedIn Recruiter, and Boolean search techniques is essential. Excellent communication, relationship-building, and negotiation skills help you connect with candidates and hiring managers effectively. These competencies are crucial for matching top technical talent with organizational needs and ensuring a smooth, efficient recruitment process.

Do technical recruiters get paid well?

Technical recruiters typically earn competitive salaries that vary based on experience, location, and the size of the company. They often receive additional compensation through bonuses and commissions, especially when successfully placing candidates in hard-to-fill roles. Overall, the role can be financially rewarding for those with strong networking and sourcing skills.

Job description

At WHOOP, we're on a mission to unlock human performance and healthspan. WHOOP empowers members to perform at a higher level through a deeper understanding of their bodies and daily lives.

WHOOP is hiring a Director of Technical Recruiting to lead the strategy, execution, and evolution of technical hiring across the company. In this role, you will lead and develop a high‑performing technical recruiting team that partners closely with Engineering, Product, Data Science, Hardware, and our leadership team to attract exceptional talent and accelerate innovation. You are both a strategic talent leader and an operational builder - equally comfortable shaping long‑term workforce strategies, coaching recruiters, and diving into complex searches yourself when needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead and develop a world-class technical recruiting organization, fostering a high-performance, quality-driven, candidate-centric culture.

  • Partner with executive leadership, hiring managers, People Operations, and Finance to develop hiring strategies aligned with the business priorities of WHOOP and long-term growth plans.

  • Own technical recruiting performance, including capacity planning, role assignment, funnel health, quality of hire, time-to-fill, offer acceptance, and candidate experience metrics, using data to continuously improve outcomes.

  • Build scalable recruiting processes, interview frameworks, and talent programs that enable consistent, high-quality hiring across Engineering, Product, Data Science, AI/ML, Hardware, and other technical functions.

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to technical leaders, providing market intelligence, compensation insights, interview process guidance, and recommendations on hiring strategy.

  • Champion proactive talent engagement through employer branding, talent mapping, networking, and pipeline development for critical and emerging technical skill sets.

  • Partner cross-functionally to ensure recruiting practices support a high-performing hiring process while maintaining an extremely high hiring bar.

  • In tandem with Talent Operations, continuously evaluate and support implementing recruiting technologies, AI-enabled sourcing tools, and operational improvements that increase recruiter productivity and hiring effectiveness.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 10+ years of recruiting experience with significant leadership experience managing technical recruiting teams in high-growth technology organizations.

  • Proven track record of building, scaling, and leading recruiting organizations that consistently deliver exceptional technical talent.

  • Deep understanding of recruiting for a wide variety of technical disciplines that include software engineering, machine learning, data science, hardware, embedded systems, product, manufacturing, and other highly technical disciplines.

  • Experience partnering with executive leadership on workforce planning, organizational scaling, and executive-level hiring.

  • Strong analytical mindset with experience leveraging recruiting metrics, market data, and forecasting to drive strategic decisions.

  • Demonstrated ability to influence senior stakeholders, navigate ambiguity, and balance competing business priorities in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment.

  • Experience implementing and optimizing recruiting technologies, applicant tracking systems, sourcing platforms, and AI-enabled recruiting workflows.

  • Excellent leadership, coaching, communication, and relationship-building skills with a passion for developing high-performing teams.

  • Comfortable wearing multiple hats and operating with a "no task too small" mindset, recognizing that building a great organization requires both strategic thinking and hands‑on execution.

  • Strong commitment to embracing and leveraging AI tools in day-to-day tasks, ensuring AI-assisted work aligns with the same high-quality standards as personal contributions.
