Technical Project Program Manager information

What is a technical project program manager?

Technical Project Program Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the planning, execution, and delivery of complex technical projects or programs within an organization. They coordinate cross-functional teams, set project goals, manage timelines and budgets, and ensure that technical solutions align with business objectives. Their role often involves risk management, stakeholder communication, and problem-solving to keep projects on track. Unlike traditional project managers, they typically possess strong technical backgrounds and work closely with engineering, IT, or development teams. Their expertise helps bridge the gap between technical teams and business stakeholders, ensuring project success.

How does a technical project program manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project lifecycle?

Technical Project Program Managers often act as a bridge between engineering, product, design, and business teams. They facilitate communication by organizing regular sync meetings, tracking progress, and clarifying project requirements. This ensures that all stakeholders are aligned on goals, timelines, and deliverables. Successful collaboration relies on strong interpersonal skills and the ability to translate technical details for non-technical teams while managing dependencies and addressing potential roadblocks promptly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical project program manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Project Program Manager, you need strong project management skills, technical acumen, and experience with methodologies like Agile or Waterfall, often supported by a relevant degree and certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master. Familiarity with project management tools (e.g., Jira, Asana, MS Project) and enterprise systems is typically required. Exceptional leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills help navigate cross-functional teams and complex projects. These competencies are crucial for delivering projects on time, aligning technical solutions with business goals, and driving organizational success.

Job description

Drive innovation. Deliver impact. Shape mission-critical solutions.

Are you a results-driven engineering leader who thrives at the intersection of technology, strategy, and execution? Join our team as an Engineering Program Manager, where you’ll lead complex, high-impact programs that power solutions in the medical and aviation security sectors.

In this role, you won’t just manage projects, you’ll turn vision into reality. You’ll partner across a matrixed engineering organization to deliver high-quality, reliable solutions that meet customer needs—on time and within budget. If you’re energized by solving tough challenges, navigating ambiguity, and leading cross-functional teams, this is your opportunity to make a meaningful difference.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead with ownership: Plan and execute programs from concept through delivery—defining scope, schedules, budgets, and key milestones
  • Drive alignment: Balance priorities across cost, schedule, and resources while ensuring alignment with business goals
  • Shape opportunities: Partner with Business Development and Sales to develop cost estimates, timelines, and risk assessments for new programs
  • Define success: Collaborate with Engineering, Product, and stakeholders to establish clear requirements and “definition of done” after kickoff
  • Manage complexity: Own scope, requirements, and change control—proactively assessing impacts and communicating decisions
  • Build strong teams: Identify resource needs and empower cross-functional teams to deliver their best work
  • Navigate ambiguity: Translate evolving customer needs into actionable engineering plans across multiple concurrent projects
  • Mitigate risks: Lead risk, issue, and opportunity management with clear mitigation strategies and timely escalation
  • Communicate with clarity: Provide transparent, metrics-driven updates on program health (cost, schedule, scope, risks) to internal and external stakeholders
  • Enable delivery: Partner with Supply Chain and Manufacturing to ensure smooth execution, production readiness, and long-term sustainment

What You Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical field (or equivalent experience)
  • 8+ years of relevant experience, including 3–5 years leading programs/projects in a mixed hardware/software environment
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and deliver complex programs successfully
  • Strong organizational, planning, and stakeholder management skills
  • Confidence working in ambiguous, fast-paced environments—bringing clarity and direction to teams
  • Broad exposure across engineering disciplines (mechanical, electrical, systems, software), plus quality, supply chain, and manufacturing
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders across cultures and levels
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and program management tools (e.g., Microsoft Project)
  • Must meet U.S. Person requirements due to applicable regulations

Nice to Have

  • PMP Certification
  • Agile certifications (CSM, SAFe, AgilePM, PMI-ACP)

Why Join Us?

  • Work on mission-critical technologies that make a real-world impact
  • Collaborate with talented, multidisciplinary teams
  • Take ownership of meaningful programs with high visibility and influence
  • Grow your career in an environment that values innovation, accountability, and excellence.
