Job Description:
L3Harris' Missile Solutions segment, a major aerospace corporation responsible for the design, manufacture and operation of a number of critical US space and defense products, is seeking a Manager for a full-time position in the Software Engineering department in Huntsville, Alabama.
The Software Engineering Manager provides technical and functional leadership for software programs and is responsible for overseeing software engineering execution across the full development lifecycle, including planning, development, integration, verification, and delivery of required software work products. This role requires demonstrated experience with software engineering lifecycle practices for human-rated or safety-critical systems, along with the ability to provide technical oversight, support employee development, and lead software process improvement efforts.
Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)
Technical Direct Support to Programs (60%) - Provide direct technical leadership and support to software programs across the software development lifecycle. Partner with program and functional management to coordinate project plans, schedules, software work products, and execution activities. Contribute directly to software projects in both technical and leadership capacities. Support business proposal efforts by preparing, reviewing, or assessing technical inputs related to cost estimating and project scheduling using organizational metrics and relevant historical data. Coordinate test support planning with cross-functional leadership as required to meet program objectives.
Functional Management Responsibilities (20%) - Perform functional management responsibilities for assigned software engineering personnel and work scope. Responsibilities include program staffing, employee skill development, career development, coaching and mentoring, performance evaluations, salary planning, work prioritization, and technical oversight of employee work products. Support execution of software engineering training plans to ensure employee development and workforce readiness.
Software Process Improvement and Organizational Maturity (20%) - Support software process improvement initiatives by analyzing software metrics, identifying process gaps, developing and evaluating improvement options, refining metric definitions and collection methods, and assessing industry tools and resources. Contributes to activities that strengthen the growth, effectiveness, and maturity of the software engineering organization, including promoting established software engineering best practices and process discipline, and driving achievement and sustainment of Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) Level 3 or higher.
Qualifications:
Requires a bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, systems engineering, or a related discipline, along with a minimum of 9 years of progressively responsible experience in software development across the full development lifecycle, including planning, requirements, design, implementation, and test, in support of human-rated or safety-critical systems. A graduate degree in a relevant field with a minimum of 7 years of related experience or in lieu of a degree, minimum of 13 years of prior related experience may be considered.
Strong technical, collaboration, and team leadership skills are required. Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are essential.
Ability to travel up to 15%
Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level (U.S. Citizenship required). Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.
