Job description

The Manager Software Engineering at Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin will work closely with technical product owners to understand business needs and translate them to well-groomed product backlog in Jira and design artifacts using design tools such as system architecture, business process flows, and Data Flow Diagrams. Assist product owners and scrum masters with estimation of work effort and prioritization of functional and non-functional features to be delivered. Lead development of low-latency APIs following the industry's best practices. Follow code version control and branching strategy to enable faster and efficient code delivery. Participate in design review with other scrum team members to ensure applications are developed with high standard practices. Establish best practices in the team to make sure enterprise domain standards are followed in defining platform APIs. Work closely with scrum teams to continuously improve platform metrics such as platform uptime, addressing vulnerabilities timely, and reducing change release cycle time. Develop quick Proof of Concept to evaluate new technology or frameworks to be used by team for meeting business needs. Work with DevOps & Risk Engineers to plan for production capacity needs around computation and storage for applications under development and other application monitoring needs for AWS services. Review health of test suits and offer improvement suggestions to reduce number of delivered defects. Build reusable frameworks and libraries which can be leveraged by teams across platform. Profile application code and database scripts for performance optimization. Develop user guides and documentation to help API consumers, fellow engineers and customer success team to support applications in production efficiently. Work with Java, NodeJS, Typescript, SonarQube, Cucumber, Postman, Karate, Git, AWS EC2, AWS Lambda, DynamoDB, PostgreSQL. Mentor, guide and coach engineers for technical and leadership growth. Recruit, hire and onboard talent ensuring right mix of talent within team. Telecommuting permissible. Salary $126,000- $269,100 per year.
Minimum Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or a related field and five years of experience as a software engineer, technology analyst or related occupation. Experience must include at least two years of experience with each of the following: (1) leading engineering teams; (2) leading technology delivery for a bank-end platform using programming languages, event-driven architecture, and cloud native applications; (3) prioritization, planning, and road map work for platforms; (4) engineering technologies including Node.js, Typescript, Kafka, DynamoDB, Lambda, Kubernetes, Postman, PostgreSQL, GIT, EC2; and (5) designing and delivering technology solutions.
