What is a technical project manager in software?

A Technical Project Manager in software is a professional responsible for planning, executing, and overseeing software development projects. They bridge the gap between technical teams and stakeholders, ensuring that development goals align with business objectives. Their duties include managing timelines, budgets, resources, and risks while facilitating communication between developers, designers, and clients. Technical Project Managers often have a background in software engineering or IT, enabling them to understand technical challenges and guide teams effectively.

How does a technical project manager in software typically coordinate between development teams and stakeholders?

Technical Project Managers in software play a crucial role in bridging the gap between technical teams and business stakeholders. They often facilitate regular meetings, such as sprint planning and progress reviews, to ensure everyone is aligned on project goals and timelines. Clear communication and documentation are key, as they translate technical updates for non-technical stakeholders and relay business priorities to the development team. This collaborative approach helps manage expectations, mitigate risks early, and ensure successful delivery of software projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical project manager in software, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Project Manager in Software, you need a strong understanding of software development processes, project management methodologies (such as Agile or Scrum), and a relevant technical background, often supported by a degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with project management tools like Jira, Trello, or Asana, as well as certifications such as PMP or Certified ScrumMaster, is typically expected. Leadership, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities help you manage cross-functional teams and stakeholder expectations. These skills ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and meet quality standards in complex software environments.

Job description

Technical Project Manager

Location: New York, NY
Schedule: Hybrid

Lead. Connect. Build.

We're looking for a Technical Project Manager to join a dynamic technology environment and play a key role connecting business stakeholders, engineering teams, and technical leadership.

This is an opportunity for someone who thrives at the intersection of technology and business - someone who can take a business need, understand the technical requirements behind it, and turn it into clear, actionable work for an engineering team.

You'll work closely with software engineers and senior technology leaders, helping drive projects forward, bring structure to complex initiatives, and ensure everyone is aligned from idea through execution.

If you're technically curious, highly organized, and enjoy being the person who keeps teams moving in the right direction, this could be a great fit.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Partner with engineering leadership and business stakeholders to plan and execute technical initiatives

  • Gather, analyze, and document business and technical requirements

  • Translate business needs into clear technical tickets, user stories, tasks, and acceptance criteria

  • Work closely with software engineers to ensure requirements are understood and actionable

  • Manage and organize technical work throughout the development lifecycle

  • Track priorities, project progress, dependencies, risks, and outstanding action items

  • Facilitate communication between technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Help teams stay aligned on scope, priorities, timelines, and deliverables

  • Participate in project planning, status meetings, and technical discussions

  • Maintain clear and organized project documentation

  • Communicate project updates and technical considerations to senior stakeholders

  • Identify gaps, blockers, and dependencies and help drive them toward resolution

What We're Looking For

We're open to candidates with different professional backgrounds who have experience working closely with technology or software development teams.

Your previous title might be:

  • Technical Project Manager

  • IT Project Manager

  • Technical Program Manager

  • Project Manager

  • Technical Business Analyst

  • Business Systems Analyst

  • Systems Analyst

  • Product Owner

  • Scrum Master

  • Project Coordinator

  • Implementation Manager

  • Software Development Project Manager

What matters most is your ability to understand technology, organize complex work, and communicate effectively across teams.

Youโ€™ll Bring
  • Experience supporting projects within a technology, software, or engineering environment

  • Understanding of the software development lifecycle (SDLC)

  • Experience gathering and documenting business and technical requirements

  • Experience creating or managing Jira tickets, user stories, technical tasks, or acceptance criteria

  • Strong ability to translate between technical and business audiences

  • Excellent organization and attention to detail

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, and stakeholders

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Confidence working with engineers, business leaders, and senior stakeholders

  • Experience working in an Agile / Scrum environment

Technical Experience Is a Plus

You don't need to be a software engineer to succeed in this role.

We're particularly interested in candidates who have exposure to areas such as:

  • APIs and system integrations

  • Backend development concepts

  • Git / software repositories

  • Application architecture

  • Development and deployment workflows

  • Jira or similar project/ticketing platforms

  • Agile / Scrum methodologies

  • Cloud technologies

  • Enterprise applications and systems

Why This Opportunity?

This is more than a traditional project management role.

Youโ€™ll sit directly between business strategy and technical execution, working with engineering teams while gaining visibility into how technology initiatives are planned, prioritized, and delivered.

Itโ€™s an opportunity to take ownership, work with experienced technical leaders, and continue building your understanding of software development and modern technology environments.

If youโ€™re a Technical PM, IT Project Manager, Business Analyst, Scrum Master, or technical professional looking to take the next step in your career, weโ€™d love to connect.
