This job opening is for one Traffic System Specialist I or II depending on business need and applicant's qualifications and experience. Qualification and experience will determine the applicant's position and pay. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.
Traffic Systems Specialist I - B18 | $45,521 - $71,055 yearly
Traffic Systems Specialist II - B19 | $48,244 - $76,028 yearly

Position Description
Performs specialized electrical/electronic technical work related to traffic management/control systems, communication, illumination or traffic data collection devices/systems. Work involves technical expertise in developing, installing, testing, programming and repairing of electrical/electronic devices/systems. Work may require working in heavy traffic and may require extensive statewide travel. Work requires contact with governmental and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties:
Traffic System Specialist I or II:

• Acts as a liaison with other governmental and private entities concerning utilities and rights-of-way. Analyzes and interprets schematics and wiring diagrams.
• Assists in designing and reviewing traffic signal, traffic data collection or illumination projects; makes recommendations.
• Assists in the electronics repair lab.
• Attends meetings with Area Engineers and contractors to resolve problems and implement solutions.
• Consults with Department personnel, manufacturers and/or vendors regarding equipment operation, design, installation, equipment failure, complex repairs or replacement recommendations.
• Coordinates materials and equipment usage with district maintenance offices.
• Drives/operates a bucket truck to install and repair electronic traffic control devices at various heights.
• Identifies, troubleshoots and problem solves possible new site characteristics.
• Measures intersections and evaluates traffic patterns and timing sequences; computes mathematical factors for adjusting timing of traffic signals and/or

Additional Essential Duties for a Traffic System Specialist II:

• Administers contracts for the installation and maintenance of traffic management/control, illumination and data collection devices.
• Assists in developing strategic plans to meet core business needs.
• Designs and reviews traffic signal, traffic data collection or illumination projects; makes recommendations.
• Develops and prepares written reports that provide feedback on systems including ease of installation and setup, status of inventory needs, any problems encountered or other issues.
• Coordinates communication between district/division/Department of Public Safety and other external entities.
• Develops specifications for equipment associated with land mobile radio systems for use by TxDOT.
• Draws graphs, charts, diagrams and site layouts; writes engineering specifications to document and illustrate observations and conclusions.
• Inspects construction methods, workmanship and maintenance procedures to ensure contractors build, install, maintain and repair traffic control/data collection related equipment or facilities in accordance with plans, specifications and contract requirements.
• Installs, maintains and replaces TV cameras, motorized LED and fiber optic signs and cables; monitors communication devices/systems; as required moves related equipment/items.
• Responds to emergency situations to assist with repairing and programming land mobile radio systems.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience:
Traffic Systems Specialist I : 2 years experience in construction, electronic troubleshooting, electrical construction/installation, electromechanical, traffic management, transportation engineering, design, traffic systems maintenance.
Traffic Systems Specialist II: 3 years construction, electronic troubleshooting, electrical construction/ installation, electromechanical, traffic management, transportation engineering, design, traffic systems maintenance. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Licenses and Certifications:

• Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
• Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A" License, within 180 calendar days from date of employment.

Currently Military or Veterans: US Military CDL Equivalent Conditions of Employment: US Military License candidates must successfully obtain Texas Class "A" CDL within 180 days of employment .
Preferred Qualifications: Commercial Class "A" Driver's License
Competencies:
Traffic Systems Specialist I or II:

• Fundamentals of Electrical/electronics and design procedures.

• Radio and wireless communications equipment, network components and systems.
• Applicable Industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes.
• Performing design/drafting work and preparing plans.
• Applying engineering principles, practices and methods in job responsibilities.
• Analyzing and organizing business and technical data.
• Interpreting Applicable information.
• Using computers and Applicable programs, applications, and systems.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
