What is a technical designer?

A technical designer works in the fashion industry to help take a garment from concept to shelf. As a technical designer, it’s your job to take creative designs and adapt these ideas into actual products. Your primary duties include reviewing design work, developing a plan with the manufacturer, and ensuring that the finished product meets the quality standards of your company. You must have knowledge of patterns, fit, and fashion design. As the industry is becoming more modernized, you should also be familiar with the various tech and software tools used in the design process. While this position is most common in fashion apparel, you may find work in other industries as well.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a technical designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Designer, you need a strong background in design principles, garment construction, and technical specifications, often supported by a degree in fashion design or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, pattern-making tools, and PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) systems is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities ensure accurate product development, clear collaboration between design and production teams, and high-quality finished products.

How does a technical designer typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

Technical Designers work closely with various departments, such as product development, engineering, and production teams, to ensure that designs are both creative and technically feasible. They frequently translate creative concepts into detailed technical specifications and often participate in meetings to resolve design challenges or clarify requirements. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as Technical Designers must balance the creative vision with manufacturing constraints and quality standards throughout the project lifecycle.

Job description

Why join us?
Our purpose is design for the good of humankind. It's the ideal we strive toward each day in everything we do. Being a part of MillerKnoll means being a part of something larger than your work team, or even your brand. We are redefining modern for the 21st century. And our success allows MillerKnoll to support causes that align with our values, so we can build a more sustainable, equitable, and beautiful future for everyone.
As the SFCC Technical Lead, you'll be the senior technical anchor for MillerKnoll's Salesforce Commerce Cloud storefronts, including Herman Miller, Design Within Reach, and Knoll. We're looking for an experienced SFCC engineer who enjoys mentoring other developers as much as writing code, and who can partner closely with our architect, product owner, and merchandising teams to turn requirements into well built features.
Essential Functions
  • Serve as the senior technical resource on day to day development across our SFCC SFRA storefronts, setting patterns and reviewing approach before code is written.
  • Partner with the platform architect to translate architectural decisions into implementable plans, and help coordinate feature delivery and maintenance across the team.
  • Mentor developers at all levels through code review, pairing, and hands on guidance.
  • Own the team's git branching strategy and release process, and help evolve CI/CD pipelines to improve deployment reliability and reduce lead time.
  • Monitor storefront performance and lead triage on production issues.
  • Work directly with the product owner to translate business requirements into clear, testable acceptance criteria for tickets.
  • Write code across the stack, from SFRA controllers to React front end components.
  • Support the team's ongoing modernization efforts, including test automation and AI enabled development practices.
  • Document technical designs and development processes for the team.
  • Assist merchandising and product data teams with Business Manager configuration.

Qualifications
Required:
  • 5+ years of hands on Salesforce B2C Commerce (SFCC) development, with deep SFRA experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of Business Manager and the broader B2C Commerce stack (site configuration, ISML, job scheduling, pipelines/controllers).
  • Experience working across the full application stack including React, TypeScript and SFRA back end.
  • A proven track record of leading technical initiatives and growing/mentoring development teams.
  • Able to collaborate and communicate effectively with business stakeholders and product owners.
  • Proficiency with git for version control and collaborative development workflows, and familiarity with CI/CD pipelines.

Desirable:
  • Exposure to headless/composable commerce patterns (SCAPI, Next.js, Storefront Next).
  • Experience with modern test automation (Playwright, Jest, Vitest).
  • Familiarity with agentic development optimization, especially with Claude.
  • Active within the Salesforce Commerce Cloud developer community.

Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or relevant academic discipline preferred.
  • 5+ years of professional SFCC/SFRA development experience required. Salesforce B2C Commerce certifications nice to have.
