Job description

General Purpose:
Evaluates requests for proposals (RFP's) assigned by the Chief Estimator or Pre-Construction Director for scope activity requirements. Attends site pre-bid meetings for clear identification of scope along with obtaining information pertaining to erection planning and logistics of the facility or site. Implements estimating strategies and prepares labor and materials cost estimates for assigned projects. Attends Operational Review to present prepared estimates.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Capable and competent in accomplishing the following estimating functions:
  • Utilize codes & specifications, 3D models, isometric drawings, orthographic plans / sections, and bill-of-materials to perform detailed on-screen "material-take-off" (MTO) estimating software or utilizing conventional MTO means as dictated by project specifics and/or the sophistication of drawings provided.
  • Prepare labor and material cost estimates using the Enterprise MTO information and the estimating labor or by conventional (manual) means as project specifics dictate.
  • Structure the MTO conducive to customer bid form requirements and complete bid forms.
  • Send out material lists to vendors to solicit up to date pricing for inclusion in the estimate. Select equipment, estimate associated costs, and incorporate into project estimates.
  • Work with Engineering, Safety and QA / QC managers regarding costs they identify and / or project staffing they require included in the estimate to meet bid document requirements.
  • Interface with customers, vendors and subcontractors as required regarding assigned estimates.
  • Solicit subcontractor bids and evaluate complete subcontract analysis of bids obtained.
  • Assist the Project Controls Department with scheduling and sequency planning of the estimate.
  • Prepare written Clarifications & Exclusions for inclusion into proposals.
  • Write proposals for review by Lead Estimators.
  • Visit customer field locations as required to gain information (i.e. ascertain equipment needs, site pictures, construction strategies, etc.)
  • Attend customer office and / or on-site meetings on assigned estimates as required (i.e. pre-bid meetings, proposal review meetings, project KOM, etc.)
  • Assists the Chief Estimator / Director of Pre-Construction in continuously improving the estimating and proposal process.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Estimator and/or Director of Pre-Construction.
  • Effectively communicate and project the principles of McCarl's Values and Core Competencies.

Qualifications:
  • One of the following is required:
  • Field and/or project experience in heavy industrial construction
  • Bachelor's degree (BS) in Engineering, Construction Management, or related technical fields
  • Associates Degree in Drafting or Design, Construction, or related craft fields
  • Basic understanding of engineering disciplines (i.e. mechanical, civil / structural, electrical, instrumentation, etc.) and ability to read technical documents.
  • Relevant estimating, field/construction experience is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of estimating manuals and methods to produce complete construction estimates is a plus.
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills within all levels in the company.
  • Ability to attain and promote good customer relationships (both internal and external).
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical and business, and legal documents.
  • Ability to effectively present information to clients, top management and/or project teams.
  • Intermediate experience with Microsoft Office and Navisworks. Experience with AccuBid is a plus.
  • Basic computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, and Outlook.
  • Ability and willingness to work overtime when needed.

Travel Requirement:
This position requires over-the-road travel with overnight stays to assigned project locations. 10% travel (with only 1% of overnight travel).
Physical Requirements:
Will regularly sit, use of hands/fingers, reach w/ hands/arms. Will frequently stand, talk/hear, repetitive motions. Will occasionally walk, grasp, climb/balance, bend/stoop/kneel/squat/crawl. Lift/Carry up to 20lbs. Push/Pull up to 10lbs. Near & Far vision.
Work Environment:
Will regularly be in an office. For the most part, ambient room temperatures, lighting and traditional office equipment as found in typical office environment. Will occasionally be in a job or shop site. Moderate noise level. Employees must use personal protective equipment as deemed necessary by the industry/construction safety standards and/or by McCarl's safety policy and procedures.
