What is a tech controller?

Tech Controllers, also known as Technical Controllers, are professionals responsible for overseeing, maintaining, and troubleshooting technical systems and networks within an organization. Their primary duties include ensuring the smooth operation of communication systems, monitoring network performance, and quickly resolving any technical issues that arise. They often work with IT teams to implement new technologies, maintain system security, and optimize technical processes for efficiency. Tech Controllers play a critical role in minimizing downtime and supporting the overall technological infrastructure of a business.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tech controller?

To thrive as a Tech Controller, you need a strong background in financial management, accounting principles, and technology operations, typically supported by a degree in finance, accounting, or information systems. Familiarity with ERP systems, financial reporting software, and data analytics tools is commonly required, along with certifications like CPA or CMA. Exceptional analytical thinking, communication, and leadership skills help in collaborating across technical and finance teams. Job description

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Kforce has a client that is seeking a Controller. This position could be located in Manhattan, NY or Boston, MA. This could be a contract or hire role or straight perm hire.
Summary:
Are you a hands-on accounting leader who thrives in fast-paced, high-growth environments and wants the opportunity to build, scale, and influence a finance organization from the ground up? Our client is seeking a seasoned Controller to serve as the company's most senior dedicated accounting leader, reporting directly to the VP of Finance & Commercial Strategy. This is a unique opportunity to take ownership of the entire accounting function, design scalable processes, and partner closely with executive leadership while supporting a rapidly growing, technology-driven business.
In this highly visible role, you will lead all aspects of accounting operations, including month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close, financial reporting, general ledger management, and US GAAP compliance. You will be the subject matter expert for complex revenue recognition across subscription, transaction-based, partnership, and affiliate revenue streams, ensuring compliance with ASC 606 and advising leadership on the accounting implications of strategic business decisions.
This role is ideal for a self-starter who enjoys both strategic leadership and hands-on execution. As the organization grows, you will have the opportunity to build and mentor an accounting team while serving as a trusted advisor to Finance, FP&A, Revenue Operations, Engineering, HR, and executive leadership. You'll play a critical role in shaping accounting policies, evaluating new business initiatives, supporting international expansion, and presenting key financial insights to senior stakeholders.
REQUIREMENTS:
* Active CPA strongly preferred
* 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including public accounting (Big 4 or equivalent)
* Deep expertise in US GAAP and ASC 606 revenue recognition
* Experience supporting SaaS, subscription, marketplace, fintech, e-commerce, or technology-enabled business models
* Proven success independently leading close processes, consolidations, technical accounting, and financial reporting in a high-growth environment
* Strong knowledge of payroll accounting, stock-based compensation (ASC 718), intercompany accounting, tax compliance, and multi-entity operations
* Ability to build processes from scratch, operate autonomously, and translate accounting complexity into meaningful business insights
Candidates currently serving as Controllers or high-performing Assistant Controllers ready to take the next step in their careers are encouraged to apply.
