Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan

San Francisco, CA โ€ข On-site, Remote

$300K - $380K/yr

Full-time

Job description

The Opportunity

Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan ("Teachers'") manages ~C$270B globally and is recognized as one of the most sophisticated direct investors in the world. With over 80% of assets managed internally, we combine long-term capital with disciplined underwriting and the ability to lead at scale. Teachers' Venture Growth (TVG) is our dedicated late-stage venture and growth equity platform, managing ~C$15B globally. On the direct investment front, we deploy ~C$1B annually into minority investments in scaled private technology companies. TVG has invested in category leaders such as SpaceX, Databricks, Canva, Anthropic, Gusto, Grafana, Kong, StackAdapt, and many others.

We are seeking a Managing Director in San Francisco to join our North America Direct team. We are intentionally looking to add a Silicon Valley-based investor who brings differentiated access, cycle-tested judgment, and the ambition to help scale a high-performing institutional growth platform.

The Mandate

You will:

  • Own sector coverage within North American technology

  • Develop differentiated investment theses

  • Originate, lead, and close minority growth investments (typically Series C +)

  • Write and defend investment committee recommendations

  • Serve as an active board member or observer

  • Develop junior talent and elevate team performance

TVG's average initial equity commitment is ~US$100M and we frequently lead or co-lead rounds. You will collaborate closely with senior TVG leadership, the TVG Funds team, and adjacent OTPP asset classes, but investment decisions and portfolio ownership resides within TVG.

What Success Looks Like

Within the first 12-24 months, you will have:

  • Expanded our access to high-quality companies and founders not already in our network

  • Led and closed compelling later-stage investments

  • Demonstrated strong board engagement and value-add through inflection points

  • Raised the bar for analytical rigor and decision quality across the team

  • Developed junior investors through direct coaching and meaningful ownership

We are building the next phase of our North America platform and this role is expected to contribute materially to that evolution.

The Profile

We are seeking an investor who brings:

  • 12+ years of direct investing experience in later-stage venture or growth equity

  • A demonstrated track record leading minority investments in scaled technology companies

  • Meaningful board experience and exposure through exit

  • Deep, credible relationships across Silicon Valley and the broader North American technology ecosystem

  • Strong transaction leadership and negotiation capabilities

We will not consider candidates whose experience is limited to early-stage investing or those without direct underwriting responsibility.

Equally important:

  • Experience investing through multiple market cycles with visible evidence of judgment shaped by volatility

  • High standards, intellectual independence, and accountability

  • A collaborative, strengths-based leadership style suited to a global institutional platform

We focus primarily on later-stage technology assets across a wide range of sectors, however, we are generally less active in consumer internet and health tech.

Why Teachers'

Teachers' offers something distinctive in Silicon Valley:

  • Long-duration capital that allows us to invest through cycles

  • The ability to write large checks and lead

  • A disciplined, globally integrated investment culture

  • A truly global platform with deep institutional resources

  • A clear purpose: delivering retirement security to 340,000 teachers who rely on us for long-term financial stability in retirement

Our capital is not transient. It represents the deferred earnings of educators. That responsibility shapes how we underwrite risk, support companies, and build enduring value. This is an opportunity to combine institutional scale with entrepreneurial impact.

Compensation

Base salary range: USD $300,000-$380,000, plus eligibility for Teachers' annual incentive plan and Long Term Incentive Plan compensation programs. Final compensation reflects experience, capability, and internal alignment.

What we're offering

  • Numerous opportunities for professional growth and development

  • Comprehensive employer paid benefits coverage

  • A flexible work environment combining in office collaboration and remote working

  • Competitive time off

  • Our Flexible Travel Program gives you the option to work abroad in another region/country for up to a month each year

At Ontario Teachers', diversity is one of our core strengths. We take pride in ensuring that the people we hire and the culture we create, reflect and embrace diversity of thought, background and experience. Through our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion strategy and our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), we celebrate diversity and foster inclusion through events for colleagues to connect for professional development, networking & mentoring. We are building an inclusive and equitable workplace where our talent is respected, accepted and empowered to be themselves. To learn more about our commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, check out Life at Teachers'.
