Location: John McIntire Library, 220 N. 5th Street, Zanesville, OH 43701

Pay Range: $20.57–$22.18 per hour

Status: Full-Time

Schedule: Primarily Monday–Friday, with occasional evening or weekend hours at various locations throughout the year as needed

Position Summary

The Muskingum County Library System is seeking a detail-oriented, collaborative, and service-minded Technical Services Supervisor to oversee the daily operations of the Technical Services Department.

This position plays a key role in helping library materials move accurately and efficiently from order to shelf and into the hands of patrons. The Technical Services Supervisor leads a small team responsible for acquisitions, cataloging, classification, processing, and ongoing maintenance of library materials. This position also supports data integrity within the library’s Integrated Library System, TLC Library Solutions, and collaborates with Public Services, IT, Accounting, vendors, and other staff to improve access, efficiency, and metadata quality.

The ideal candidate understands that technical services work is essential to excellent public service and brings a blend of technical, leadership, and collaborative skills to daily work. This role is well suited for someone who enjoys coaching staff, improving systems, and balancing detailed technical work with collaborative problem-solving.

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesDepartment Leadership and Workflow
  • Supervise, train, support, and guide a small Technical Services team to ensure accurate, timely, and efficient department operations.

  • Assign and prioritize work, monitor daily workflows, and help ensure consistent handling of acquisitions, cataloging, materials processing, and record maintenance.

  • Maintain and update procedures, documentation, and training resources; recommend improvements to Technical Services policies, procedures, and workflows.

  • Collaborate with staff across the library system to resolve issues, improve processes, and support timely access to library materials.

  • Communicate department updates, workflow changes, and technical services procedures clearly to staff.

Cataloging, Classification, and Metadata
  • Manage cataloging and classification of library materials using established standards, including Dewey Decimal Classification, RDA, Library of Congress Subject Headings, and OCLC standards.

  • Create, edit, review, and maintain bibliographic and item records to ensure accuracy, consistency, and ease of discovery in the library catalog.

  • Conduct data and physical processing audits, identify record inconsistencies, and correct metadata and item record issues as needed.

  • Maintain accurate holdings, item information, and catalog records within TLC Library Solutions.

  • Keep current with cataloging standards, classification practices, and technical services best practices.

Acquisitions, Ordering, and Budget Documentation
  • Oversee the full acquisitions process, including preparing and placing orders requested by other departments, receiving materials, maintaining ordering and fund records, tracking weekly materials budget activity, approving invoices, coordinating with Accounting as needed, communicating with vendors, resolving order or invoice issues, and ensuring complete and accurate purchasing documentation.

  • Monitor processing supply inventory and budget and coordinate ordering of supplies needed for Technical Services operations.

Materials Processing and Collection Support
  • Oversee the physical processing of library materials to ensure items are accurately prepared for circulation and patron use.

  • Ensure consistency in labels, barcodes, item records, processing instructions, mending, weeding support, and ongoing maintenance of library materials and related records.

  • Work with Public Services staff to resolve catalog, item, processing, or access issues that affect patrons or staff.

ILS, Records, and Technology Support
  • Support data integrity within TLC Library Solutions through regular review, cleanup, and maintenance of bibliographic and item records.

  • Collaborate with IT on record imports and exports, batch uploads, MARC record integration, and other system-related projects.

  • Assist staff with questions related to catalog records, item records, the online catalog, and technical services workflows.

  • Provide occasional assistance to customers and staff related to the catalog, library equipment, digital resources, and technical services questions as needed.

Other Responsibilities
  • Provide excellent customer service, desk coverage, and staff support at MCLS locations as needed.

  • Participate in meetings, trainings, and projects related to Technical Services and library operations.

  • Support a collaborative, community-focused workplace culture.

  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant library experience.

  • Minimum of three years of library experience, with comparable team leadership experience.

  • Familiarity with cataloging standards, classification systems, bibliographic records, and Integrated Library Systems, with the ability and willingness to continue learning specialized tools and workflows.

  • Experience with or ability to learn acquisitions workflows, vendor communication, order records, invoice review, and budget tracking.

  • Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Ability to lead a team, manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain accurate records.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff across departments.

  • Valid State of Ohio driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Public library technical services experience.

  • Experience using TLC Library Solutions or another Integrated Library System.

  • Experience with OCLC and MARC record editing.

  • Experience with acquisitions, vendor platforms, invoice processing, and fund tracking.

  • Experience creating procedures, training staff, improving workflows, or leading department projects.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

This position works primarily in a library staff workroom and office environment, with frequent use of computers, library systems, carts, boxes, and library materials. Work may include sitting or standing for extended periods, repetitive hand and wrist movement, unpacking and moving materials, pushing or pulling carts, and lifting or carrying boxes and library materials.
