JOB TITLE: Substitute Educator
CLASSIFICATION: Temporary, on-call
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
An active Unrestricted Oregon Teaching License issued from the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC).
Unrestricted Teaching Licenses include: Substitute Teaching, Preliminary Teaching, Professional Teaching, Teacher Leader, Principal, Professional Administrator, Preliminary CTE, or Professional CTE
If your TSPC license application is pending, please wait to apply until your license has been granted.
Please note: PPS is not currently considering candidates who hold a Restricted Substitute Teaching License, Emergency or other provisional teaching license types. The District is not currently sponsoring provisional teaching licenses for Substitute Teaching positions.
POSITION SUMMARY
Substitute Educators are valued members of the Portland Public Schools community who play an integral role in supporting the students and school communities of Portland Public Schools. Working as a Substitute Educator with Portland Public Schools requires a high level of flexibility and adaptability. Substitute Educators are eligible to work throughout the district in any school, any subject, and any grade level working a flexible schedule on an as-needed basis, with the ability to assign themselves to jobs up to one month in advance.
Substitute Educators are responsible for providing instruction, managing the classroom environment, and facilitating student learning in the absence of the regular educator. Substitute Educators perform under the supervision of a principal or other designated supervisor, and have the responsibility to continue the instructional program according to the directions left by the absent educator. Substitute Educators function in accordance with all PPS policies, rules, and regulations, and in accordance with the performance standards of the District.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
  • Implement and deliver instructions left by the absent Classroom Educator while ensuring the integrity of academic time.
  • Model and instruct students appropriately in citizenship and interpersonal relationships and responsibilities.
  • Provide instruction, organization, and management in the classroom, which creates an environment conducive to learning.
  • Manage student behavior and maintain discipline in accordance with school, district, and state policies, procedures, and laws.
  • Advocate, model, and implement Portland Public Schools Racial Educational Equity policy.
  • Confer with the principal or designated supervisor concerning the completion of any reports that may be necessary including but not limited to student attendance and performance.
  • Communicate necessary information regularly to the absent educator as well as students, colleagues, and caregivers regarding student progress and needs as needed.
  • Supervise classified employees who are assigned to assist the absent teacher, classroom, or designated students.
  • Display judgment that supports professional standards of conduct at all times.
  • Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.
