Job description
Alumni Casual Nonexempt Position - Fall 2026
Teaching Interns work with a Leadership Minor instructor in a LEAD class and serve as a peer leader, contribute to aspects of instruction, and work toward self-identified leadership development goal(s).
Through this work, Teaching Interns continue growing their ability to lead toward collective liberation by analyzing systemic power imbalances, evaluating multiple leadership frameworks, building collaborative leadership skills, and developing their leader identities.
This Casual Nonexempt role is open to university alumni who have completed the Leadership Minor.
Teaching Interns can expect to log 5 hours of work each week. Occasionally, TIs can log additional hours with added justification (such as TI workshop weeks).
Job Responsibilities
Course-related responsibilities
- Assist instructor in communicating with students regarding class content and tasks, class assignments, leadership development and student performance
- Assist instructor with grading student assignments utilizing assignment descriptions, rubrics and instructor feedback
- Assist instructor with tracking student attendance and participation
- Assist instructor with making Canvas updates and announcements
- Receive opportunities to assist instructor with preparation of class materials
- Review course materials including readings and assignments
- Communicate with instructor at least weekly regarding course-related tasks and responsibilities
- Provide ongoing reflection and feedback to instructor that is related to course content, content facilitation, student learning, student concerns, class dynamics, etc.
- Attend all class meetings (In-person & synchronous remote classes only)
- Assist with facilitation of in-class activities, with opportunities to lead the facilitation of in-class activities (In-person & synchronous remote classes only)
Training & Development responsibilities
- Complete onboarding tasks
- Complete required university training, such as on data protection and preventing sexual misconduct
- Establish, alongside your instructor, at least one personal leadership development goal to work on within this role throughout the semester; Communicate regularly with instructor for opportunities to work on that goal and receive coaching and feedback
- Participate in check-in with the Teaching Intern coordination team (1 per semester)
- Participate in Teaching Intern training workshops (2 per semester)
- Participate in Teaching Intern peer development check-in (1 per semester)
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree
- Eligible for employment at the University of Minnesota
- Completed LEAD course they are working with
- Declared or completed the Leadership Minor
- Available to work 3-8 hours per week throughout the entire semester
- Available to attend assigned class meeting time (if applicable)
- Demonstrated commitment to Leadership Minor mission to support students to explore multiple leadership frameworks, address systemic power imbalances, develop their leader identities, and build their toolbox for leading toward collective liberation
- Uphold university policies, including student conduct code
- Able to serve as peer leader by demonstrating an understanding of LEAD course content, as well as skills in communication, cultural humility, ethical boundaries, collaboration, relationship building, organization, reliability, timeliness, and attention to detail
Preferred Qualifications
- Earned at least a B in all completed LEAD courses

As an academic minor of four core courses and one elective course, the Leadership Minor supports students' ability to lead toward collective liberation by analyzing systemic power imbalances, evaluating multiple leadership frameworks, building collaborative leadership skills, and developing their leader identities.
Pay Range: $15.25 a hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
