What is a teaching intern?

Teaching interns are individuals, often students or recent graduates, who work in educational settings to gain practical experience in teaching. They assist experienced teachers in the classroom, help plan lessons, support student learning, and may gradually take on more teaching responsibilities under supervision. The internship is designed to provide hands-on exposure to classroom management, curriculum development, and instructional techniques while allowing interns to develop their own teaching skills. Teaching internships are commonly part of teacher education programs or requirements for teacher certification.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a teaching intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Teaching Intern, you typically need a background in education or your subject area, along with a willingness to learn classroom management and instructional techniques. Familiarity with educational technology platforms like Google Classroom and basic office software is often expected. Strong communication, adaptability, and collaboration skills help you build rapport with students and support experienced teachers. These skills and qualities are crucial for creating a positive learning environment and gaining practical teaching experience.

What types of support and mentorship can a teaching intern expect during their placement?

As a Teaching Intern, you will typically receive guidance and mentorship from experienced teachers or supervising staff. Most schools pair interns with a mentor teacher who provides regular feedback, advice, and opportunities to observe classroom management techniques.
