Job description

Position Overview: 

As a Tax Accountant at WABTS, you will play a pivotal role in managing and optimizing our tax compliance and planning efforts. Your primary responsibilities will include preparing and reviewing tax returns, ensuring adherence to tax regulations, and providing strategic advice to minimize tax liabilities. You will stay updated with the latest tax laws and industry trends through continuous professional development, participation in industry organizations, and engagement with professional networks. Your role is crucial in ensuring accurate and timely tax reporting, as well as supporting financial planning and decision-making processes. 

Tax Accountant Duties and Responsibilities: 

Prepare tax schedules and tax returns accurately from supporting documents (income statements, balance sheets and third-party tax statements) 

Find tax solutions to complicated tax issues or errors from incorrect tax filings 

Identify legal tax savings and recommend ways to reduce potential tax liabilities 

Ascertain that clients comply with federal, state, and local tax regulations 

Prepare workpapers, government forms, and properly document business activities to prepare annual tax returns  

Research tax laws and stay current on the potential tax liabilities in their industry and understand Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) 

Prepare journal entries, bank reconciliation, financial statements (balance sheet, income statements, general ledger and trail balance) 

Process EFTPS, Sales Tax Returns, State and Federal Unemployment Tax Forms 

Communication Skills: Must be able to explain complex tax regulations and financial statements in a simple and obvious way to non-specialists so that they can clearly understand Ability to communicate financial information effectively to co-workers, clients, and 3rd parties, (banks, government agencies, etc.) both orally and in writing. 

Financial Reporting: Experience with tax and accounting software (e.g., Pro-Series, Turbo Tax, QuickBooks, SAGE, NexGen, etc.) and proficiency in using spreadsheets for financial analysis and reporting. 

Time Control: Must have sound time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet specific deadlines. 

Problem-Solving Skills: Must be able to solve issues and be creative in critical thinking. 

Ethical Standards: Adherence to ethical principles and integrity in handling financial information and transactions. 

Dependability: Job requires being reliable, responsible, and punctual in fulfilling obligations. 

Continuing Education: 

  • Participate in relevant workshops, seminars, and online courses to stay abreast of changes in tax laws, regulations, and best practices. 

  • Pursue and maintain certifications that enhance expertise and compliance with industry standards. 

Education and Experience:  

College Graduate (bachelor's degree in accounting) with at least 2 – 5 years of work experience in taxation and accounting.    

Pre-Employment Assessment: 

As part of our hiring process for the Tax Accountant position, candidates will be required to complete a pre-employment assessment. This assessment is designed to evaluate your technical skills, knowledge of tax regulations, and problem-solving abilities. The assessment will include: 

  • Technical Proficiency: Exercises related to tax return preparation, tax compliance, and tax planning scenarios. 

  • Analytical Skills: Situational questions to assess your ability to interpret and apply tax laws and regulations. 

  • Attention to Detail: Tasks to gauge accuracy and thoroughness in handling financial data and tax documentation. 

  • Problem-Solving: Case studies or hypothetical scenarios to evaluate your approach to resolving complex tax issues.
