What is a tax software developer?

Tax software developers are specialized software engineers who design, build, and maintain applications that assist individuals, businesses, and tax professionals with tax preparation and filing. They work on developing user-friendly interfaces, integrating tax law changes, ensuring data security, and automating complex calculations. Their role is crucial in keeping tax software accurate, compliant, and efficient for end users.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tax software developer?

To thrive as a Tax Software Developer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like Java, C#, or Python), a solid understanding of tax regulations, and a background in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tax preparation software, version control systems like Git, and frameworks such as .NET or Spring Boot is typically required, and certifications in software development or taxation can be advantageous. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and interpreting complex tax requirements. These skills ensure the development of accurate, secure, and user-friendly tax software that complies with evolving legal standards.

What are some common challenges faced by tax software developers when integrating new tax regulations into existing systems?

Tax Software Developers often encounter challenges when adapting systems to comply with frequently changing tax laws and regulations. These updates can be complex, requiring thorough analysis to ensure that all calculations and forms remain accurate and compliant across different jurisdictions. Developers must also collaborate closely with tax experts and QA teams to interpret legal requirements correctly and test for edge cases. Balancing rapid implementation with rigorous testing is crucial to minimize errors that could impact users during tax season.

Juno Tax Software Specialist San Diego, CA ยท Full time

Tax Software Specialist for booming AI tax platform

About Juno

Founded by a CPA and tax firm owner, Juno is a fast-growing AI company solving real problems for tax accounting firms. Our mission is to empower every tax professional with technology that truly understands the job because itโ€™s built by someone whoโ€™s lived it. Trusted by hundreds of firms and growing quickly, weโ€™re building tools people rely on every day. If youโ€™re excited about using AI to solve real problems and help shape the future of tax, weโ€™d love for you to be part of it.

Description

Tax Software Specialist (AI Tax Platform)

Company: Juno (Juno.Tax)

Location: Hybrid in San Diego; open to full-time remote for the right candidate.

Schedule: Flexible, roughly 9amโ€“5pm in your local time zone

Role Overview: Juno is hiring a Tax Software Specialist to help ensure the accuracy, consistency, and reliability of our AI-driven tax platform. This role sits at the intersection of tax, systems, and product quality and is ideal for someone who enjoys validating logic, testing edge cases, and thinking holistically about how tax data flows through a system. This is a remote role with flexible working hours, generally aligned to a 9amโ€“5pm schedule in your local time zone. Experience with tax software platforms or startups is a plus, but not requiredโ€”strong tax fundamentals, curiosity, and an ownership mindset are most important.

About Juno: Founded by a CPA and tax firm owner, Juno is a well-funded startup building AI-powered tax accounting tools that combine AI, deterministic tax logic, and deep professional tax software integrations to eliminate manual work, achieving a 97% first-pass accuracy rate, and relieving tax professionalsโ€” not replacing themโ€”while building strong momentum across the tax industry.

What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Test the platform end-to-end from document upload through AI extraction, validation, tax logic, tax software export, and return generation
  • Stress test complex tax scenarios including multi-state returns, K-1s, investments, and edge cases
  • Validate exports and tax logic across professional tax software platforms including Drake, ProConnect, Lacerte, UltraTax, and CCH
  • Run daily regression tests and full QA test preps
  • Partner with Product, Engineering, and Customer Support to ensure consistent behavior across tax software mappings, preparer data that is pulled and validated, reviewer gotcha checks, and advisor and assistant AI responses
  • Document tax logic decisions, QA findings, and edge cases
What Weโ€™re Looking For
  • 2+ years of experience in tax preparation, accounting, or audit
  • Strong understanding of federal and state individual tax returns
  • Experience with one or more professional tax software platforms (Drake, ProConnect, Lacerte, UltraTax, CCH)
  • Background at a tax, accounting, or auditing firm
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong analytical thinking
  • Ability to work independently, take ownership, and operate comfortably in a startup environment
Nice-to-Haves (Not Required)
  • Experience with multiple professional tax software platforms
  • CPA or EA (active, inactive, or in progress)
  • Bachelor's in Accounting
  • Interest in AI-driven products and modern tax technology
Benefits & Perks
  • Unlimited PTO and company holidays
  • Medical, vision, and dental coverage (100% employee, 90% family)
  • Home office and learning & development stipends
  • Meaningful equity for every employee
