Tax Resolution Manager information

What is a tax resolution manager?

A Tax Resolution Manager is a professional who helps individuals and businesses resolve tax issues with government agencies like the IRS or state tax authorities. They oversee cases involving unpaid taxes, audits, tax liens, and other tax-related problems, developing strategies to negotiate settlements or payment plans. Tax Resolution Managers often work for tax firms or legal practices and coordinate a team of tax professionals to ensure clients achieve the best possible outcome. Their expertise includes tax law, negotiation, and compliance, guiding clients through complex tax processes.

What are some common challenges faced by tax resolution managers, and how can they address them effectively?

Tax Resolution Managers often encounter challenges such as managing complex client cases with tight deadlines, navigating changing tax regulations, and communicating effectively with both clients and tax authorities. To address these, it’s essential to stay current on tax laws, prioritize strong organizational skills, and foster clear, empathetic communication. Building a collaborative relationship with team members and leveraging technology for case tracking can also help streamline processes and improve client outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tax resolution manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Tax Resolution Manager, you need in-depth knowledge of tax laws, IRS procedures, and financial analysis, often supported by a degree in accounting, finance, or a related field and relevant certifications such as Enrolled Agent (EA) or CPA. Proficiency with tax software, case management systems, and document management tools is essential. Strong negotiation, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills set outstanding professionals apart when dealing with clients and tax authorities. These abilities are crucial for effectively resolving complex tax issues, ensuring compliance, and maintaining client trust.

Job description

Tired of preparing the same returns on repeat?

We are a tax controversy practice led by an Attorney-CPA, and the work here looks different from a compliance shop. You will prepare fiduciary and entity returns - but you will also reconstruct books for non-filers who haven't filed in six years, analyze IRS account transcripts to find the real story, build the financials behind offers in compromise and installment agreements, and prepare returns that get filed into active examinations and appeals. Every engagement has a problem attached to it.

What We're Looking For:
  • Active CPA license or Enrolled Agent credential (required)
  • 5+ years preparing federal tax returns in a tax accounting firm, tax resolution firm, public accounting, a law firm tax practice, or a trust department
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with Form 1041 - this is a core part of the role, not an occasional return
  • Solid working knowledge of pass-through and corporate returns: S corporation basis and AAA, partnership allocations and capital account reporting, reasonable compensation
  • Comfort working independently on incomplete records and unusual fact patterns
  • Clear written communication - you will be documenting positions that get reviewed by taxing authorities
  • Helpful but not required: experience with international information returns (Forms 5471, 3520, 8938, FBAR), fiduciary accounting, or prior exposure to IRS examination or collection practice.
