What is tattoo removal?

Tattoo removal is a process that uses specialized techniques, most commonly laser technology, to break down the ink particles in a tattoo so that they can be absorbed and eliminated by the body's immune system. The most popular method is laser tattoo removal, which targets the pigment in the ink without causing significant damage to the surrounding skin. Multiple sessions are usually required, depending on the size, color, and age of the tattoo. Tattoo removal can result in some discomfort and may involve a healing period after each session.

What are tattoo removal jobs?

Tattoo removal jobs involve using specialized equipment to remove permanent ink-based tattoos for a customer or client. Positions include being a medical esthetician, a tattoo removal specialist, or a cosmetic laser technician. Depending on your job responsibilities, you remove tattoos using different methods. Licensed estheticians and laser technicians use lasers to remove tattoos, while some cosmetic professionals use dermabrasion treatment. You can perform these duties at aesthetic clinics, plastic surgery offices, or medical spas. Tattoo removal specialists focus solely on tattoos, while estheticians are certified to perform other types of cosmetic procedures as well.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a tattoo removal specialist?

To thrive as a Tattoo Removal Specialist, you generally need knowledge of laser technology, skin anatomy, and safety protocols, often supported by relevant certifications or training in laser procedures. Familiarity with FDA-approved laser equipment, patient management software, and proper sterilization systems is crucial. Exceptional attention to detail, strong communication, and a reassuring bedside manner help build trust with clients and manage expectations. These skills and qualities are essential for delivering safe, effective treatments and ensuring client satisfaction and safety.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in tattoo removal, and how can they be managed?

Tattoo removal specialists often encounter challenges such as managing client expectations about results, dealing with varying skin types and ink colors, and ensuring safety during laser procedures. It’s important to communicate clearly with clients about the number of sessions likely required and possible side effects like temporary skin irritation or discoloration. Staying updated on the latest laser technologies and best practices, as well as working closely with dermatologists when necessary, can help address these challenges and ensure the best outcomes for clients.

Both careers are found in medical and aesthetic settings, with overlapping skills but different primary focuses.

Is laser tattoo removal a good career?

Laser tattoo removal is a growing career in the aesthetic industry, requiring knowledge of laser technology, skin anatomy, and safety protocols. Professionals typically need specialized training and certification, and the job often involves working in clinics or medical settings with flexible schedules. It can be a rewarding career for those interested in cosmetic procedures and patient care.

What qualifications do you need to remove tattoos?

Tattoo removal specialists typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, along with training in laser technology and skin safety. Certification from a recognized organization and knowledge of skin anatomy are often required to ensure safe and effective procedures.

Job description

Registered Nurse (RN) – Tattoo Removal Specialist

West Hollywood, California

Join the global leaders in tattoo removal

Think Again Tattoo Removal operates across Australia, New Zealand, and the USA and has built a reputation for delivering world-class tattoo removal outcomes through industry-leading technology, advanced treatment protocols, and one of the most comprehensive training programs in the field.

With 12 clinics internationally and continued expansion underway, we are looking for an exceptional Registered Nurse to join our West Hollywood team.

This is not a typical aesthetics or med-spa role.

We're looking for someone who wants to build a long-term career within a highly specialised industry, become an expert in tattoo removal, and join a company that invests heavily in its people.

Why nurses choose Think Again

World-class training

No previous tattoo removal experience is required.

We have spent more than a decade developing the most in-depth tattoo removal training program available anywhere in the industry. You'll receive comprehensive hands-on training, ongoing mentorship, and direct access to the founders of the company, who remain actively involved in training, coaching, and developing our team. This isn't a large corporate environment where leadership is inaccessible. You'll learn directly from the people who built the business from a single clinic into an international company operating across Australia, New Zealand, and the United States.

Join a growing international company

Think Again currently operates 12 clinics across Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. As we continue to grow, opportunities exist for leadership, training, management, and future expansion projects.

Clinical autonomy

You will manage the entire client journey from consultation and treatment planning through to treatment delivery and final clearance. You'll build genuine relationships with clients and see the direct impact of your work over time.

Elite technology and protocols

Work with advanced laser technology and proprietary treatment systems that have been refined through thousands of successful tattoo removal treatments worldwide.

A culture you'll actually enjoy

We're a small, high-performing team that values accountability, professionalism, initiative, reliability, and genuine care for both our clients and each other.

We can teach tattoo removal. We can't teach attitude.

Travel Requirement

While your primary clinic location will be West Hollywood, this is not a single-location position.

Following successful completion of training, you will be required to work from our Costa Mesa clinic for approximately five weeks per year to provide operational support and cover team leave.

Travel periods will be planned in advance wherever possible and all reasonable travel-related expenses, including mileage, will be covered by Think Again.

What you'll do

  • Conduct detailed client consultations
  • Develop customised treatment plans
  • Perform advanced laser tattoo removal treatments
  • Deliver exceptional client care and education
  • Monitor and document treatment outcomes
  • Maintain accurate clinical records and photography
  • Follow strict infection control and safety procedures
  • Build long-term relationships with clients throughout their tattoo removal journey
  • Contribute to a positive, professional clinic culture

What you'll receive

  • $85,000 – $90,000 base salary
  • Performance bonuses and incentives
  • Employer-paid medical insurance
  • 401(k)
  • Four weeks paid vacation
  • Birthday leave
  • Free tattoo removal
  • Family and friends treatment discounts
  • Mileage reimbursement for travel between clinics
  • Ongoing professional development and advanced training
  • Genuine long-term career opportunities within a growing international company

The ideal candidate

You are:

  • A California Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Reliable and highly accountable
  • Warm, personable, and confident
  • An exceptional communicator
  • Professional and client-focused
  • Coachable and eager to learn
  • Organised with strong attention to detail
  • Looking for a long-term career rather than simply your next job

Experience that may be helpful

  • Aesthetics
  • Laser treatments
  • Med-spa environments
  • Customer Service roles

However, attitude, professionalism, and work ethic are far more important to us than previous tattoo removal experience.

Why this opportunity is rare

Tattoo removal is one of the most difficult specialties to enter.

Very few clinics have the patient volume, systems, technology, and training infrastructure required to properly develop new specialists.

We invest heavily in our team and are looking for someone who sees this as a genuine career opportunity.

If you're ambitious, motivated, and excited by the opportunity to become one of the industry's leading tattoo removal clinicians, we'd love to hear from you.
