Job description

ROLE Surerus Murphy Joint Venture is recruiting for a competent, enthusiastic, and dynamic CAD Technician to join our team supporting ongoing energy infrastructure construction projects across Canada & USA. This role reports to both the Digital Design Lead, as well as project-based engineering & construction teams. A CAD technician works with project teams to prepare engineering design and construction drawings, process survey information, create & develop 3D models, and output construction models for machine control files.

SMJV places engineering at the forefront of all our infrastructure construction projects. Applicants with the drive to succeed, a strong work ethic and always seek to improve are encouraged to apply. Pipeline (or similar) experience is preferred but additional training will be provided for suitable candidates new to the energy infrastructure industry.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Opportunity to work on high-profile, large-scale energy projects of national importance, including oil & gas pipelines, net-zero energy projects & renewable energy projects. Use the latest Autodesk CAD software to prepare project design & construction 3D models and drawings. Create large earthworks & grading models for export into site equipment for machine control & calculation of material volumes.

Utilize UAV LIDAR & photogrammetry data, laser scan pointcloud data sets and orthographic imagery for incorporation into, and development of, 3D construction models. Responsible to produce project construction facilitation drawings, including access route plans & road upgrade drawings, site & equipment layouts, trenchless pipeline crossings, open cut pipeline crossings, environmental mitigation drawings, lift plan drawings, steep slope identification & construction drawings. Work in different geographic coordinate systems with metric, imperial and mixed metric units.

Produce project models & drawings in accordance with the company CAD Standard, ensuring that drawings are prepared, stored, issued, and archived in accordance with current company procedures. Project data management of all CAD files. Follow checking and self-checking process, issuing drawings to internal and external clients, and managing electronic information.

Solve technical challenges, maintain and improve knowledge of drafting techniques, task workflows, standards, and engineering procedures. Employee development and training opportunities through company annual Personal Development Reviews. Opportunities to attend industry seminars, conferences and project site visits.

Display excellent time management skills to complete time sensitive deliverables. Display strong analytical and problem-solving skills to understand what tasks are required. Note: In addition to these duties, personnel are required to carry out such other duties as may be reasonably required in order to support the objectives of the company.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS Qualifications Completion of high school diploma is required. Graduate from an accredited college program in Civil Engineering Technology, Design Engineering Technology, CAD Technology, or from a career college in Engineering CAD / BIM Technology. Experience Minimum of 2 years previous experience in a similar role.

Field experience is an asset. Skills and Knowledge Excellent Autodesk Civil 3D skills & knowledge - ideally completion of recognized Civil 3D Essentials course as a minimum. Genuine interest in drafting and digital engineering & construction technology practices, processes and workflows.

Strong and professional verbal and written communication. Advanced Civil 3D skills with strong proficiency in corridor and earthworks modelling. Competence in the use of Autodesk Navisworks and ReCap would be an advantage.

Strong understanding of pipeline construction, design, techniques, and equipment is an asset. Understanding of pipeline crossing designs & techniques - HDB, HDD, and Augerbore crossing design is an asset. Knowledge of the design & construction of utility scale solar farm projects would be an asset.

WORKING CONDITIONS This is a permanent position based at our Spruce Grove office with a 5-day work week, 8 hour days. There will be a requirement to be site based when placed to work on a construction project. Project sites are usually based in areas throughout Alberta and British Columbia.

Project schedules will typically follow 6 days on 1 day off shift, working 12 hours per day with a site based daily pay uplift.
