Position Summary:

The Senior Application Engineer is responsible for working with project managers, mechanical engineers, and designers to manage project data, engineering documentation, and 3-D models; creating parts lists, bills of materials, and other component related information critical to the success of the project. The engineer will perform a variety of engineering work in the initial planning and design phases of projects, focusing primarily on the system processes as well as the associated controls and instrumentation in Oil & Gas and other industrial applications.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Organize and process information to assist in developing designs, specifications, and drawings of equipment.
  • Design products in a professional and time efficient manner to meet ASME, API, UL, and NACE design requirements as well as customer specifications and deadlines.
  • Work in tandem with the mechanical engineer to provide a complete mechanical design for vessels and piping systems, which can then be modeled and drafted by designers.
  • Create Process Flow Diagrams (PFD) and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) for upstream, mid-stream and downstream Oil & Gas facilities.
  • Verify instrumentation component selection including controls, flow measurement meters, and valves for piping and vessel system based off the P&ID and customer specification sheets.
  • Conduct Material Take Off (MTO’s) from customer supplied or internally created models and drawings. Size controls, flow measurement meters, valves, and develop instrumentation lists based on the PFD and P&ID. Create Bill of Material and Long Lead Item (LLI) lists.
  • Proactively anticipate risks associated with project execution and take steps to mitigate as necessary.
  • Assist in the development of company designed systems, standards, products, and procedures
  • Participate in design reviews.
  • Monitor the design and drafting related to projects and report to the VP of Engineering.
  • Assist supply chain with recommending appropriate alternates for instrumentation, control valves, flow measurement meters, and other devices.
  • Provide estimating support for RFQ / Proposals, working closely with Sales and Project Management departments to ensure the technical aspects of the estimate are accurate.
  • Size Petrosmith equipment for customer applications in Oil and Gas.
  • Provide subject matter expertise for assigned manufacturing processes and product lines.

Required Skills and Tools:

  • Self-starter that demonstrates initiative; ability to take direction and act independently
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Good time management, prioritizing, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Ability to interpret, analyze, and create engineering drawings, PFDs, P&IDs, General Arrangement drawings, piping systems, etc. with strong attention to detail.
  • Working knowledge of industry codes and standards (ASME Section VIII, ASME B31.3 piping, AWS, API, ASTM, OSHA, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of NACE MR0175
  • Experience with oil and gas related production equipment (separators, heaters, tanks, piping systems, well manifolds, VRTs, VRUs, LACT Units, etc.)
  • Knowledge of piping and pipe schedules, flanges, fittings, etc.
  • Knowledge of valves and instruments used in oilfield production equipment
  • Working knowledge of on-skid electrical and instrumentation; ability to read electrical diagrams
  • Experience in oilfield surface production equipment, especially skidded packaged systems
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Office; ProMAX; SolidWorks and/or AutoCAD)
  • Strong safety awareness.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Mechanical or Petroleum discipline with minimum 10 years’ experience with design of pressurized equipment
