The Professional Development Manager works with Practice Group Leadership, Firm management, and administrative professionals to execute on all facets of attorney professional development, including the annual review process, performance feedback, and benchmarks. The Professional Development Manager will implement strategies that foster a collaborative work environment and drive attorney development, engagement, and satisfaction. The Professional Development Manager will work to foster a supportive, high-performance culture, promote a work environment that helps attorneys reach their highest potential, and serve as a resource for attorneys on career-development matters as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all phases of the annual review process including working with partners to prepare developmental messaging and following up on development plans. Contribute to continuous enhancements to the review process.

  • Work with Director of Professional Development to develop and implement career frameworks for associate and career path timekeepers, set compensation ranges, and recommend discretionary bonus awards.

  • Liaise with Practice Group Leadership and Practice Management on an ongoing basis to monitor associate performance, identify candidates for advancement and address performance or utilization issues.

  • Support the development of individual development plans with associates and career path attorneys.

  • Work with Legal Talent Directors, Training Managers, and HR to implement and adapt Firm policies and procedures related to performance ratings, core skills competencies, and advancement.

  • Review and synthesize key themes discussed in self-evaluations and attorney evaluations to inform Firm programs, policies, training, benefits, and other key retention and wellbeing initiatives.

  • Monitor and report on Firm population trends (arrivals, departures, attrition) and report on industry trends as they relate to performance reviews and feedback processes.

  • Collaborate with other firm administrative departments, including practice management, finance, HR, IT, and marketing.

  • Collaborate with other legal talent teams on initiatives that foster engagement and retention and promote an inclusive culture.

  • Fast, flexible thinker with the ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and perform well under pressure.

  • Strong project management skills with a high level of attention to detail.

  • Creative, solutions-oriented problem-solver who exercises sound business judgment.

  • Able to build effective relationships and collaborate across the Legal Talent Development team, firm leadership, and other administrative functions.

  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Flexible and willing to manage demands outside of traditional business hours, as needed.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree; any combination of training, education, and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position may be considered.

  • Minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience, preferably with a law or professional services firm, or in a corporate environment.
