Job description

Film Restoration Artist
Location: Full-Time, In-House - Torrance
Company: Duplitech
About Duplitech
Founded in 1996, Duplitech is one of Los Angeles' most respected independent media service laboratories, specializing in the restoration, remastering, and delivery of premium catalog titles for major motion picture studios and global streaming platforms. Our teams support over 100 feature film remastering projects annually, delivering pristine masters for Blu-ray, UHD, theatrical re-release, and digital distribution worldwide.
Position Summary
Duplitech is seeking an experienced Film Restoration Artist with advanced expertise in FilmWorkz Phoenix to join our in-house Torrance restoration team.
This role focuses on the high-end restoration of studio catalog titles, working from newly scanned film elements and archival sources. The ideal candidate possesses both technical mastery and a refined visual sensibility, with a deep respect for preserving original cinematography and artistic intent.
The Restoration Artist plays a critical role in preparing iconic films for modern audiences - ensuring they meet today's technical standards while honoring their historical integrity.
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform advanced digital restoration using Filmworkz Phoenix, leveraging both automated processes and detailed frame-by-frame manual repair
  • Identify and correct film defects including dirt, dust, scratches, flicker, gate weave, instability, density fluctuation, mold damage, warping, and digital noise
  • Execute precise grain management and stabilization while preserving authentic film texture and photographic integrity
  • Repair torn or damaged frames, reconstruct missing imagery, and address complex physical degradation issues from archival film elements
  • Ensure restoration consistency across reels and sequences to maintain visual continuity throughout the feature
  • Work from high-resolution scans including ProRes, DPX and TIF image sequences
  • Collaborate closely with colorists to ensure restoration work integrates seamlessly into grading workflows
  • Coordinate with conform, editorial, and data management teams to maintain accurate timelines and version control
  • Follow studio-approved restoration methodologies and adhere to strict quality control standards
  • Maintain organized project documentation and asset management protocols

Qualifications & Experience
  • Proven professional experience restoring feature film or episodic catalog titles
  • Advanced proficiency in Phoenix Film Restoration Software (required)
  • Strong understanding of photochemical film characteristics, grain structure, density, and common age-related degradation artifacts
  • Experience working within studio-driven restoration workflows and delivery requirements
  • Exceptional visual acuity with the ability to identify subtle image defects
  • Strong decision-making skills to balance automation with manual intervention
  • Ability to manage multiple titles while maintaining high-quality standards and meeting production deadlines
  • Team-oriented mindset with the ability to work independently in a structured post-production environment

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is passionate about cinematic preservation and understands the responsibility involved in restoring culturally significant films. They demonstrate patience, discipline, and an uncompromising commitment to quality - ensuring each title reflects both its original artistry and Duplitech's standard of excellence.
