Job description

Position: Expeditionary Tactical & Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Type: Full-time

Location: San Diego, CA

Travel: 10%

Position Summary: The Expeditionary Tactical & Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for maintaining and repairing NSW tactical, expeditionary, and heavy equipment platforms in shop and field environments. This role supports mission critical readiness by performing intermediate level and field level maintenance on tactical vehicles manufactured by OEMs such as Oshkosh, AM General, Mack, International, and Freightliner. The mechanic operates with minimal supervision and provides cross support to automotive and heavy equipment maintenance efforts based on operational priorities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform maintenance and repair on tactical and expeditionary vehicles
  • Conduct intermediate level and field level repairs with minimal supervision
  • Diagnose and repair diesel engines, drivetrains, suspension, steering, and braking systems
  • Support expeditionary and deployed maintenance operations
  • Cross support automotive and heavy equipment maintenance as required
  • Perform inspections and corrective actions identified during maintenance cycles
  • Document labor, parts, and maintenance actions in Fleet Focus
  • Operate Government vehicles in official performance of duties
  • Follow NAVFAC P300, P480, OEM guidance, and NSW maintenance standards

Required Qualifications:

  • Must hold an active Secret Security Clearance
  • Ability to obtain installation access credentials
  • Valid U.S. driver's license
  • U.S. citizenship required
  • Minimum 5 years at an intermediate or depot level military maintenance facility, or E6E7 equivalent military experience
  • Experience maintaining tactical and expeditionary vehicles
  • Ability to maintain platforms manufactured by Oshkosh, AM General, Mack, International, and Freightliner
  • Proficiency using Asset Works Fleet Focus or similar maintenance management systems
  • Certification: ASE certification in diesel engines plus at least one additional heavy truck or tactical vehicle category (ASE requirement may be waived with 5 years as a depot level shop lead mechanic or supervisor)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Compliance with hazardous material, safety, and facility access procedures
  • Compliance with drugfree workforce requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds
  • Standing, bending, kneeling, climbing on vehicles and equipment
  • Work in motor pool, shop, and field environments
  • Exposure to noise, fuels, lubricants, exhaust, weather, and rugged terrain

Physical Demands and Work Environment: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk, listen, and write. The employee frequently is required to use foot/ankle motions, hands or fingers, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is required to stand, walk, sit; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
