FMI's manufacturing facility has been a leading solutions provider of high temperature materials and composites for more than 50 years, serving the Department of Defense and NASA. The focus in Maine is on multidirectional reinforced Carbon/Carbon (C/C) and Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) that enable high-temperature components such as: thermal protection systems, re-entry vehicle nose tips as well as rocket motor throats and nozzles.

Our materials are being used on ground-breaking space initiatives such as the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle and the heat shield for NASA's Mars 2020 mission, important missile programs, airfoils in commercial and military jet engines, and as lightweight armor for U.S. military ground vehicles.


Your role: FMI is seeking a dependable, skilled Engineering Technician to join the Research & Technology team. In this role you will support experimental trials, prepare and process composite preforms, operate high-temperature equipment, conduct mechanical/thermal experimental trials to process and or evaluate materials. You will also collaborate with engineers and scientists to help refine manufacturing techniques, troubleshoot processes, support low volume manufacturing and document results to advance the development of next-generation aerospace and defense materials/components.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Support engineering initiatives, development processes and manufacturing operations
  • Maintain process records, lab books, operate recording equipment, etc
  • Create basic process documentation, work instructions and travelers
  • Prepare equipment for operation and perform post process servicing
  • Participate in root cause analysis investigations as part of a team
  • Work with maintenance team to troubleshoot equipment issues
  • Implement equipment and process improvements
  • Operate with an uncompromising safety-first attitude

What we need from you:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 2+ years of work in a manufacturing environment or equivalent technical / vocational training
  • Ability to use basic hand tools and measurement equipment
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to write basic process procedures or instructions
  • Basic computer skills; Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Outlook
  • High level of mechanical aptitude
  • Strong work ethic
  • Good attention to detail
  • Works well individually and as a member of a team
  • Work experience in a research environment

Preferred:

  • Associate degree in trade / industrial / engineering discipline, demonstrated progress toward a technical degree or equivalent military experience
  • Familiarity with fiber reinforced composite materials and associated manufacturing processes
  • Familiarity with high temperature processing equipment
