Fiber Materials Inc. | solutions for the most extreme places in the universe

FMI's manufacturing facility has been a leading solutions provider of high temperature materials and composites for more than 50 years, serving the Department of Defense and NASA. The focus in Maine is on multidirectional reinforced Carbon/Carbon (C/C) and Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) that enable high-temperature components such as: thermal protection systems, re-entry vehicle nose tips as well as rocket motor throats and nozzles.

Our materials are being used on ground-breaking space initiatives such as the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle and the heat shield for NASA's Mars 2020 mission, important missile programs, airfoils in commercial and military jet engines, and as lightweight armor for U.S. military ground vehicles.


Your role: FMI is seeking a safety and goal orientated team player to help support our manufacturing team in a climate controlled environment. As a Hand Weaver, you will have the opportunity to work directly with the carbon fiber material through hand weaving it in 3 & 4- directional weaves. Second shift is Mon-Thu 3:30pm-1:30am with a 10% shift differential.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Perform repetitive hand weaving tasks including using tools and applying physical force to weaving fixtures
  • Make needles, spools, and perform associated utility jobs
  • Inspect products to ensure that specifications are met
  • Loom set-up, rodding, weaving functions, documentation updates, in-process compressions, and frame installation
  • Must wear safety shoes and safety eyewear
  • Maintains safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations
  • Supports, cooperates with, and participates in company-wide Lean improvement initiatives

What we need from you:

  • High School diploma or equivalent GED
  • Pass a physical (vision & lifting) & drug screen
  • Great hand-eye coordination
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work well within a team and independently
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and write
  • Possess basic math skills; a basic math skill test will be given to candidates
  • Manufacturing experience/exposure preferred
  • Able to stand for long periods of time
