What is a systems integrator?

A systems integrator is an engineer tasked with building computing systems for a client, working with software, hardware, and various storage products. As a systems integrator, you primarily combine subsystems into one integrated solution and perform job duties such as purchasing subsystems from different contracted vendors, assessing information technology (IT) system requirements, creating an integration plan or solution, and building a personalized application or architecture to meet client needs. Systems integrators need IT, software development, and problem-solving skills. Qualifications for this career include at least a bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering, or a related field as well as experience with integrating technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a systems integrator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Systems Integrator, you need a solid understanding of IT systems, networking, and software development, often supported by a degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field. Familiarity with integration platforms, APIs, middleware, and certifications such as CompTIA Network+ or Cisco CCNA are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication, and project management skills help you collaborate effectively with diverse teams and clients. These skills ensure seamless integration of complex systems, minimizing downtime and maximizing organizational efficiency.

How does a systems integrator typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

As a Systems Integrator, you’ll frequently work alongside software developers, network engineers, project managers, and client representatives to ensure seamless integration of various subsystems. Collaboration usually involves regular meetings to discuss technical requirements, progress updates, and troubleshooting challenges. Clear communication is essential, as you’ll be responsible for translating client needs into technical solutions and ensuring that all team members are aligned on project goals. This cross-functional teamwork not only helps in resolving issues quickly but also provides opportunities to broaden your technical and interpersonal skills.

Role Overview

Join the Data Feed Integration (DFI) team on the Advanced Battle Management System (ABMS) Cloud-Based Command and Control (CBC2) Program. In this role, you will support efforts as the Lead Systems Integrator (LSI) by driving data feed integration initiatives. The DFI team plays a pivotal role in ensuring the seamless integration of external data feeds, API-based systems, and internal architectures, enabling mission success. This position is central to modernizing advanced Command and Control (C2) capabilities for government systems and advancing operational readiness.

Work Environment

This position operates in a hybrid work environment with responsibilities divided between 25% travel for installations and integration events in secure spaces, 25% in-office presence for team collaboration, and 50% remote work. This is a position that blends technical, strategic, and collaborative responsibilities. You will manage repeatable, standardized integration processes while also developing custom solutions for complex challenges requiring knowledge of software networking, secure data exchange, and system compatibility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Take initiative to drive integration efforts forward by coordinating across teams and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with external stakeholders and internal teams to capture and analyze data feed requirements.
  • Employ and refine repeatable data feed integration processes to ensure efficiency, consistency, and scalability.
  • Analyze unique or technically challenging data exchange requirements, designing tailored solutions.
  • Write comprehensive data mappings between external data formats (CSV, JSON, XML, Parquet, ORC, etc.) and the program’s internal data structures.
  • Create, update, and present system diagrams, integration workflows, and technical architecture artifacts.
  • Write and maintain actionable Jira tickets to guide development work.
  • Partner with cybersecurity teams to validate architecture changes and meet security requirements.
  • Oversee end-to-end testing for new data feed integrations, identifying and resolving issues.
  • Engage in lightweight scripting and software development tasks to enable custom data transformations.
Required Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, Information Systems, Systems Engineering, or a related technical field and nine (9) years of relevant experience; OR a Master’s degree and seven (7) years of relevant experience. Equivalent years of directly related experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Experience: 8+ years of professional experience in one or more of the following roles: Software Systems Engineer, Data Engineer, or Software Engineer.
  • Experience should include designing and integrating complex software architectures, ETL pipelines, and scalable systems for secure data exchange. Proficiency in integrating data feeds, APIs, and distributed systems is required.
Technical Skills
  • Strong programming skills in Java, Python, and SQL.
  • Proficiency with data formats such as CSV, JSON, and XML.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing, developing, and maintaining data pipelines.
  • Expertise in troubleshooting performance bottlenecks and compatibility issues.
  • Strong collaboration skills in cross-functional Agile teams.
Citizenship
  • Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship is required for this position.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Additional certifications (e.g., CompTIA Security+, CISSP, CCSP) or certifications in data engineering, cloud architecture, or software networking.
  • Familiarity with additional programming or scripting languages such as Rust, Go (Golang), R, or Python libraries like Pandas is a plus.
  • Experience with cloud-focused programming (e.g., working with APIs, cloud SDKs).
  • Familiarity with event-driven architectures or stream-processing technologies like Kafka or RabbitMQ.
  • Proven ability to work in secure environments, performing installations and integration events in restricted areas.
  • Proficiency in lightweight scripting to automate data transformations.
  • Knowledge of software design patterns and distributed system architectures.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
