What is a systems engineer?

Systems engineers are professionals who design, integrate, and manage complex systems throughout their life cycles. They work across various industries, ensuring that all aspects of a project or system—hardware, software, processes, and people—work together efficiently and effectively. Systems engineers coordinate between different engineering teams, address technical and organizational challenges, and ensure requirements are met. Their role often involves both big-picture thinking and attention to detail to deliver reliable and scalable solutions.

What does a systems engineer do?

The role of a systems engineer varies based on the company they work for, but in every industry systems engineers use computerized systems to keep track of all the moving parts within their organizations. The term systems engineer usually refers to a computer systems engineer, which combines several disciplines to create, purchase, and install a computer system that suits the needs of each particular client. They will also work in a hands-on manner during the installation, acquisition, testing, and implementation phases of the project. Duties typically include making recommendations for scalability, troubleshooting any problems that arise during the use of the system, reviewing a company’s security requirements, and recommending security measures to allow the company to avoid compromising any sensitive data.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a systems engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Systems Engineer, you need a strong background in systems architecture, troubleshooting, and integration, typically supported by a degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with operating systems (like Linux and Windows), virtualization platforms, scripting languages, and certifications such as CompTIA, Cisco (CCNA), or Microsoft (MCSA) are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and teamwork make candidates stand out in this role. These skills and qualifications ensure the design, implementation, and maintenance of reliable, scalable systems critical for organizational operations.

How does a systems engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project lifecycle?

Systems Engineers often serve as a bridge between various technical and non-technical teams, including software developers, network specialists, project managers, and end users. Throughout a project, they participate in requirements gathering, design reviews, and integration testing, ensuring that each component fits seamlessly within the overall system. Effective communication and documentation are crucial, as Systems Engineers must translate complex technical concepts into actionable tasks for diverse stakeholders. This collaborative approach not only streamlines problem-solving but also helps deliver robust, scalable solutions.

Job description

Ready to make connectivity from space universally accessible, secure and actionable? Then you've come to the right place!
E-Space is bridging Earth and space to enable hyper-scaled deployments of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions and services. We are building a highly-advanced low Earth orbit (LEO) space system that will fundamentally change the design, economics, manufacturing and service delivery associated with traditional satellite and terrestrial IoT systems.
We're intentional, we're unapologetically curious and we're 100% committed to innovate space-based communications and deliver actionable intelligence that will expand global economies, protect space and our planet and enhance our overall quality of life.
The Mission Systems Engineer (MSE) is the single point of technical accountability for systems engineering on an assigned government contract or task order. The MSE owns that mission's requirements baseline, interface control, verification and validation planning, and requirements compliance closure - reporting to the Program Manager and/or the Chief Systems Engineer (CSE), as assigned. The MSE operates within the enterprise system architecture and electrical ICD framework owned by the CSE, and is the CSE's forward-deployed counterpart on the contract: translating fleet-level architecture and standards into mission-specific requirements, schedules, and customer commitments.
What you will do:
Mission requirements ownership - decomposing customer/contract requirements, allocating them to subsystem and payload budgets, and maintaining the requirements compliance matrix for the assigned mission.
Interface control - developing and baselining mission-specific ICDs consistent with the enterprise electrical and system ICD framework; coordinating interface changes with subsystem owners and the CSE organization.
Verification & Validation - building and executing the mission V&V plan, defining and tracking Technical Performance Measures (TPMs), planning environmental test campaigns (TVAC, vibration/acoustic, EMI/EMC), and dispositioning test data and anomalies for the assigned mission.
Integration & Test support - supporting AI&T campaign planning and execution for the mission, including FlatSat/Hardware in-the Loop activities, test readiness reviews, and anomaly investigation for mission-specific hardware and interfaces.
Program and customer interface - serving as the technical point of contact to the government customer and Program Manager for the assigned contract; preparing for and presenting at contract technical reviews and milestones (e.g., SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR) and closing associated action items.
Configuration management - maintaining the mission's configuration baseline, participating in the Configuration Control Board process, and managing engineering change orders affecting the assigned contract.
Digital thread / MBSE - maintaining mission-level traceability between requirements, design artifacts, verification evidence, and as-built records within the enterprise digital thread; working familiarity with MBSE tools (DOORS NG, Cameo, SysML).
Contract deliverables - supporting preparation of contract data requirements list (CDRL) items and other government deliverables related to systems engineering.
What you bring to this role:
8+ years of progressive systems engineering experience in the space or defense industry, including direct requirements, ICD, or verification ownership on at least one program from early design review through delivery or on-orbit operations.
Government contract experience - prior work on a U.S. government space, satellite, or space-adjacent program, with familiarity navigating customer technical reviews, CDRLs, and government-furnished requirements.
ICD and design review experience - direct responsibility for requirements traceability and verification closure; has presented technical status or baselines at formal design reviews before a customer or internal review board.
Prior subsystem or mission depth - hands-on experience in a subsystem (payload, bus, ground, RF/comms) or mission engineering role prior to or alongside systems engineering responsibilities, sufficient to credibly coordinate across disciplines.
Digital communications familiarity - working knowledge of RF link design, phased array systems, modem/waveform, or OSI Layer 1-2 protocol architecture is a plus.
Independent judgment under oversight - ability to make and defend mission-level technical decisions and risk trade-offs, escalating to the CSE or Program Manager where enterprise-level authority is required.
Security clearance - active Secret or Top Secret clearance, or the ability to obtain one, as required by the assigned government contract.
Bonus points:
$180,000 - $200,000 a year
This is a full time, exempt position, based out of our Saratoga office. The target base pay for this position is $100,000 - $200,000 annually. The total compensation packaged will be determined by various factors such as your relevant job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
We are redefining how satellites are designed, manufactured and used-so we're looking for candidates with passion, deep knowledge and direct experience on LEO satellite component development, design and in-orbit activities. If that's your experience - then we'll be immediately wow-ed.
E-Space is not currently able to provide employment sponsorship for candidates who do not hold work authorization for the location of this role.
