Job description

Overview

Join to apply for the Longline Chief Engineer role at Coastal Villages Region Fund. Coastal Villages Longline, a subsidiary of Coastal Villages Region Fund, seeks an experienced Chief Engineer to work aboard a Freezer Longliner off the western coasts of Washington and Alaska. The Chief Engineer is responsible for the safe and efficient maintenance and operation of the vesselโ€™s engineering systems. Applicants must have a current USCG license with STCW endorsements and other merchant mariner documentation as necessary. Certifications to purchase and handle refrigerants, knowledge of oil spill response, and current 24 Hour HAZWOPER training are required.

Responsibilities
  • Operate, maintain and repair all vessel engineering systems and processes.
  • Manage diesel propulsion and electric generating systems, deck hydraulic and pneumatic systems, refrigeration plant, and fuel and lubrication systems.
  • Oversee water making/desalination, vacuum sanitation, heating and ventilation, and factory hydraulic systems.
  • Maintain product freezer systems and cargo handling equipment.
  • Knowledgable use of radar and navigational systems, Satcom and telecommunications, electrical and electronic systems.
Other Duties
  • Engage in daily operation of the vessel and ensure compliance with USCG manning, watch standing, and operating regulations.
  • Monitor and manage preventive maintenance programs for onboard engineering systems.
  • Coordinate with vessel department heads to ensure safe, efficient vessel operation.
  • Contribute to the engineering department budget and cost analyses for system modifications, upgrades, or replacements.
  • Communicate with the port engineer to obtain vendor and shore support to minimize downtime.
  • Document system failures, major repairs, and modifications for regulatory inquiries or claims;
  • Lead or delegate engineering responses to unsafe or hazardous work areas.
  • Maintain fuel and discharge logs; manage spare parts inventory and requisitions via the TeroMarine system.
  • Participate in drills and required safety training; maintain vessel work lists to USCG, Naval Architect and DNV Classification Standards.
  • Adhere to Lock Out/Tagout energy control procedures and related documentation.
  • Other duties as assigned; reports directly to the Port Engineer.

Requirements Knowledge and Skill Requirements
  • Minimum of five years of experience as a Chief Engineer or First Assistant Engineer on a commercial fishing vessel operating in Alaskan or Russian waters.
  • Must possess and maintain a proper license and all endorsements required by the U.S. Coast Guard and other regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot all marine systems as described above; knowledge of oil spill response and recovery per regulations.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials handling and disposal; thorough understanding of MARPOL regulations.
  • Strong leadership and management abilities with excellent interpersonal skills to foster cooperation; supervisory and teambuilding skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication; capable of leading crew during drills (abandon ship, firefighting, man overboard).
  • Ability to machine and fabricate with various metals and materials; VFD proficiency desired; project management and planning skills.
  • Ability to coordinate with vendors, shipyards, and outside contractors in a professional manner.
  • Punctual, organized, and able to work under stress.
Physical Demands
  • Must meet U.S. Coast Guard licensing standards for physical condition, hearing, and eyesight.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment and random drug tests.
  • Ability to board and exit a vessel via ladders; climb stairs in all weather, including extreme cold.
  • Work in confined spaces; long and variable shifts (typical 12โ€“16 hours/day).
  • Ability to lift 11โ€“20 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally; frequent bending, kneeling, and climbing; require good vision and depth perception.
  • Must gain medical clearance for use of tight-fitting respirators.
Basic Mental Functions
  • Ability to perform intermediate math and understand English (reading, speaking, writing).
  • Ability to apply basic math to American currency, weight, distance and volumes; work in stressful, noisy, and harsh environments.
