Job description

PURPOSE STATEMENT:

The System Administrator is responsible for administering, maintaining, and supporting Hawaii Gas IT infrastructure, including physical, virtual, and cloud servers, identity and access management services, endpoint management platforms, core business applications, and related network services. This role provides day-to-day operational support, performs system and network troubleshooting, contributes to infrastructure design and deployment, and helps ensure the reliability, security, and recoverability of systems that support company operations.

This position is hands-on and technical in nature, requiring the System Administrator to stay current with IT infrastructure, security, virtualization, cloud, and networking trends. This position plays a key role in identifying and communicating technology improvements that align with Hawaii Gas business and operational needs.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Administers and supports core physical, virtual, and cloud infrastructure services and provides backup support for senior-level system and network administration responsibilities as needed.
  • Manages endpoint devices and their lifecycle, including provisioning, configuration, patching, monitoring, troubleshooting, and retirement.
  • Plans and prioritizes work assignments and projects to meet objectives.
  • Develops and maintains documentation for infrastructure processes, controls, system configurations, and network topology to support operational consistency, troubleshooting, and audit readiness.
  • Performs administration of Windows server and endpoint environments, including Windows Server 2016/2019 or later, Windows 10/11 systems, Active Directory, virtualization platforms, patching, monitoring, and troubleshooting in a virtualized infrastructure environment.
  • Performs maintenance and troubleshooting for business systems, infrastructure services, endpoint platforms, and network-connected technologies to resolve incidents and maintain service availability.
  • Supports disaster recovery planning and preparedness for critical applications, infrastructure services, and systems, including recovery documentation, continuity requirements, recovery priorities, testing coordination, and readiness activities.
  • Manages backup operations and backup controls, including backup scheduling, monitoring, validation, retention awareness, restore testing, issue escalation, and reporting to support recoverability of systems, applications, and data.
  • Consults with application development teams on infrastructure requirements and offers recommendations for system integration or migration design and action plans.
  • Provides technical expertise across business functions by understanding how infrastructure technologies support company operations. Assists with installation, configuration, administration, and troubleshooting of server, endpoint, cloud, and networking services.
  • Provides assistance and support for network infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls, wireless access points, cabling, circuits, VLANs, IP addressing, DNS, DHCP, and related LAN/WAN/Wireless equipment.
  • Troubleshoots basic to intermediate network connectivity issues, including switch port status, VLAN assignment, IP configuration, wireless connectivity, firewall rule validation, DNS/DHCP resolution, and circuit or ISP escalation support.
  • Owns and administers identity and access management functions, including user account lifecycle management, role- and group-based access, privileged access coordination, access request fulfillment, access reviews, and application of established policies to ensure appropriate access to company systems and data.

OTHER FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensures the security, integrity, and privacy of Hawaii Gas computer data.
  • Complies with all safety rules and cooperates in the fullest in the promotion of safety and safe work habits, to include the reporting of any unsafe conditions or acts. Maintains all EH&S training on a current basis.
  • Complies with all applicable corporate and Hawaii Gas policies and procedures.
  • Maintains assigned work area and equipment in a clean, orderly and safe manner; performs housekeeping duties as required and/or instructed. Works in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Performs all other related duties as instructed by supervisor/manager.

Required Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems or equivalent combination of related experience and education.

Required Work Experience:

  • 3+ years of experience in system administration and network infrastructure support, or a related Information Technology role.
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365, Windows-based PCs, Windows Server, Active Directory, Azure/Entra ID, endpoint management tools, and hypervisor management.
  • Experience troubleshooting a variety of systems and infrastructure technologies, including virtualization, Windows Server, SQL Server, Exchange Server, SharePoint Online, Azure/Entra ID, Microsoft 365, endpoint management platforms, and basic network services such as DNS, DHCP, VLANs, routing, switching, wireless, and firewall connectivity.
  • Working knowledge of cybersecurity principles and the ability to apply established security policies, standards, and procedures to system and network administration tasks.

Preferred Work Experience:

  • 4 or more years of experience in system administration, infrastructure operations, or network-adjacent infrastructure support.
  • Experience administering and troubleshooting virtualization, Windows Server, SQL Server, Exchange Server, SharePoint Online, Azure/Entra ID, Microsoft 365, endpoint management platforms, and other Microsoft or industry-standard technologies. Experience supporting network infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls, wireless networks, VLANs, DNS, DHCP, and LAN/WAN connectivity in an enterprise environment is preferred.
  • Experience with enterprise virtualization platforms and related infrastructure operations is preferred.
  • Experience with hypervisors and virtual machine platforms such as AHV, ESXi, or Hyper-V is preferred.
  • PowerShell or Python scripting experience for administration, automation, reporting, or troubleshooting is preferred.
  • Exposure to cloud technologies such as Azure, GCP, or AWS is preferred, including general familiarity with cloud administration, identity, storage, monitoring, automation, data services, and platform management concepts.
  • General knowledge of DevOps concepts and practices is preferred, including an understanding of how development, operations, automation, and collaboration support reliable technology delivery and continuous improvement.

Preferred Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation:

  • Microsoft, CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Security+, Cisco CCNA, VMware, Nutanix, or equivalent infrastructure, cloud, security, or networking certification preferred.
