What is a system integration developer?

System Integration Developers are professionals who design, build, and maintain solutions that enable different software systems, applications, or databases to work together seamlessly. They are responsible for connecting disparate systems within an organization, often using APIs, middleware, or custom scripts. Their work ensures that data flows smoothly and processes are automated across platforms, improving efficiency and reducing manual work. System Integration Developers need strong programming skills, familiarity with integration tools, and a deep understanding of both the source and target systems involved.

What are some common challenges system integration developers face when working on large-scale integration projects?

System Integration Developers often encounter challenges such as ensuring compatibility between diverse systems, managing data consistency, and handling unexpected integration errors. Coordinating with multiple teams—such as software engineers, business analysts, and IT support—is critical to resolve issues quickly and maintain project timelines. Additionally, keeping up with evolving technologies and integration standards requires ongoing learning and adaptability. Addressing these challenges successfully can lead to smoother project execution and valuable experience for career growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a system integration developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a System Integration Developer, you need strong programming skills, knowledge of integration patterns, and a background in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with integration platforms (like MuleSoft, Dell Boomi, or Apache Camel), APIs, and messaging systems, as well as certifications in relevant tools, is often required. Problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating across technical and business teams. These competencies ensure seamless system connectivity, data consistency, and efficient workflows in complex IT environments.

What is the difference between System Integration Developer vs Software Engineer?

AspectSystem Integration DeveloperSoftware Engineer

Job description

FuelCell Energy is redefining how the world produces and uses power. As a leading clean energy technology company, we're helping businesses, communities, utilities, and data centers meet growing energy demands with reliable, always-on power solutions.

With nearly a gigawatt of fuel cell platforms deployed worldwide, we're accelerating the transition to a more resilient energy future. Join a team of innovators, problem-solvers, and industry pioneers who are tackling some of the world's most complex energy challenges while shaping the next generation of sustainable power.

Your work here won't just power facilities. It will help power the future.

The pay for this position ranges from $115000 - $125000.

The Systems Integration Engineer plays a key role in coordinating the design, integration, and continuous improvement of FuelCell Energy's commercial power plant systems. This position works across engineering disciplines and operational teams to ensure plant-level design changes, product enhancements, documentation, and corrective actions are technically sound, well-coordinated, and effectively implemented. The role requires a systems-oriented engineer who can connect detailed component-level work to broader plant performance, reliability, manufacturability, installation, commissioning, and service outcomes.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead cross-functional engineering coordination for fuel cell power plant design changes, product enhancements, and new feature implementation.
  • Drive system-level design reviews, FMEAs, engineering change control, and configuration management to ensure robust, reliable plant designs.
  • Investigate fleet equipment and component performance issues and support practical corrective actions that improve reliability.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and configuration-controlled product documentation that supports manufacturing, installation, commissioning, and service.
  • Support cost reduction, fabrication, installation, commissioning, and ongoing operation of commercial fuel cell power plants.
  • Partner closely with R&D, operations, manufacturing, service, procurement, design, drafting, equipment, process, electrical, instrumentation, and piping engineering teams.
  • Bring a systems perspective to complex technical issues and help translate engineering decisions into successful plant-level outcomes.

Qualifications:

Education:  BS in Mechanical Engineering preferred; Electrical Engineering considered.

Experience:  3-7 years of progressive product design or sustaining engineering experience involving skidded or packaged mechanical process equipment.

The ideal candidate will bring:

  • Hands-on experience with high-temperature equipment, insulation design, basic piping design, and skidded or packaged mechanical process equipment.
  • Proven ability to coordinate multi-discipline engineering and design teams while meeting demanding schedules.
  • Strong technical judgment, problem-solving ability, organization, communication, and follow-through.
  • Comfort working across internal teams, outside vendors, fabrication shops, and field stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with engineering change control, formal document management, P&IDs, piping isometrics, FMEA, reliability modeling, and value engineering.
  • Experience with AutoCAD &  Autodesk Inventor a must. Familiarity with FEA, or CFD software is a plus.
  • Experience conducting hydraulic analysis and familiarity with PIPE-FLO required.
  • Experience with PLM software.
  • ISO 9001 background, PE license, or knowledge of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel and Piping Codes is a plus.

Environment:

This role is primarily based in a professional office environment and includes collaboration with engineering, manufacturing, service, and field teams.

Occasional field work may include inspections, ladder climbing, walking, standing, bending, reaching, and light lifting.

Travel (domestic and international):  15%
