What is a system engineer PhD?

System Engineer PhDs are professionals who have earned a doctoral degree (PhD) in systems engineering or a closely related field. They specialize in designing, analyzing, and managing complex systems across various industries, such as aerospace, defense, IT, and manufacturing. Their advanced education enables them to conduct research, develop innovative solutions, and lead multidisciplinary teams to tackle large-scale engineering challenges. System Engineer PhDs often work in academia, research institutions, or high-level industry roles, focusing on optimizing system processes and integration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a system engineer PhD, and why are they important?

To thrive as a System Engineer PhD, you need advanced knowledge of systems engineering principles, research methodologies, and typically a doctorate in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with modeling and simulation tools (e.g., MATLAB, Simulink), systems engineering software (e.g., IBM DOORS), and relevant industry certifications are highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you lead complex projects and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualifications are essential for driving innovation, ensuring robust system design, and successfully managing sophisticated engineering challenges.

What are common challenges system engineer PhDs face when transitioning from academia to industry roles?

System Engineer PhDs often encounter challenges when shifting from academic research to industry, such as adapting to faster project timelines and working within cross-functional teams. In industry, there is typically a greater emphasis on practical application and collaboration, rather than theoretical exploration. Adjusting to structured workflows and aligning technical solutions with business objectives are also key transitions. However, this environment offers opportunities to see the tangible impact of your work and to advance into senior technical or leadership roles.

What is the difference between System Engineer Phd vs Network Engineer?

AspectSystem Engineer PhdNetwork Engineer

Job description

Responsibilities
Position Summary: As a Submarine Material Parts Expediter, you will be tasked with assignments requiring considerable judgment, initiative, and deep expertise in supply chain logistics. In addition to developing solutions to complex material sourcing problems, you will lead efforts to track, expedite, and resolve Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) obsolescence and Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages (DMSMS) cases. Your work will directly support the in-service and sustainment needs of US Navy Submarine Imaging Systems.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Lead the identification, tracking, and resolution of DLA obsolescence cases to provide continuous in-service support for Imaging Systems (Periscopes and Photonics Masts) on US Navy Submarines.
  • Expedite material procurement, track parts delivery, and coordinate with vendors to prevent supply chain bottlenecks.
  • Conduct comprehensive Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages (DMSMS) analyses to proactively mitigate future obsolescence risks.
  • Source alternative Commercial-off-the-Shelf (COTS) and mil-spec materials to replace obsolete components.
  • Review and analyze Bills of Materials (BOMs) and Technical Data Packages (TDP) to identify critical single-point failures within the supply chain.
  • Work closely with systems, mechanical, and electrical engineers to validate alternate parts and ensure they meet form, fit, and function requirements.
  • Collaborate extensively with various stakeholders (Navy, DLA, Government Civilians, OEMs, and sub-contractors) to align procurement strategies.
  • Develop, maintain, and present tracking metrics, databases, and reports regarding expedited parts, End-of-Life (EOL) notices, and supplier lead times.
  • Assist in the review and tracking of Government Furnished Information (GFI) and Government Furnished Equipment (GFE).
  • Provide readiness to travel and support supplier evaluations, site visits, and new platform configuration planning.
  • Participate actively in cross-discipline program reviews to represent material readiness and supply chain status.

Qualifications
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field. Equivalent, relevant U.S. Navy or military logistics, supply, or material control experience (e.g., Navy Logistics Specialist [LS], Storekeeper [SK], or related ratings/officer experience) may be substituted for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • BS 5-7 years, MS 3-5 years, PhD 0-2 years
  • If utilizing the military experience substitution in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 6+ years of hands-on logistics, supply, or material expediting experience is required.
  • Proven track record in managing obsolescence, DMSMS, and supply chain logistics for military or aerospace programs.
  • Deep familiarity with Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) systems, National Stock Numbers (NSNs), and defense procurement processes.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs such as Excel (advanced data tracking), Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Experience with ERP, MRP, and supply chain tracking software.
  • Exceptional organizational & critical thinking skills, as well as an unwavering attention to detail and negotiation capabilities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing, to all levels of the customer and vendor organizations.
  • Ability to effectively interpret customer goals and tasking as assigned.
  • Ability to effectively work independently and/or within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), meet deadlines, and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Position may require up to 10% travel.
  • Ability to obtain a Secret security clearance.

Additional Skills of Interest (not required):
  • Experience with submarine systems, specifically Imaging Systems.
  • Experience or working knowledge of US Navy SUBSAFE program and policies.
