What does a system designer do?

A System Designer is responsible for planning, creating, and specifying the architecture and components of complex systems, often in the fields of IT, engineering, or software development. They analyze requirements, design system structures, and coordinate with stakeholders to ensure the final product meets both technical and business needs. Their work includes creating diagrams, documentation, and models to guide the development team. System Designers play a crucial role in ensuring that systems are efficient, scalable, and reliable.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a system designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a System Designer, you need strong analytical skills, a background in computer science or engineering, and experience with system architecture and requirements analysis. Familiarity with modeling tools like UML, CASE tools, and knowledge of software development methodologies are typically required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help System Designers effectively translate complex requirements into practical solutions. These skills are crucial for creating robust, scalable systems that meet organizational needs and ensure project success.

What are some common challenges system designers face when working on complex projects?

System Designers often encounter challenges such as ensuring seamless integration between various subsystems, effectively communicating requirements to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, and managing changing project specifications. Balancing performance, scalability, and security needs while staying within budget and time constraints can also be demanding. Successfully addressing these challenges requires strong analytical skills, adaptability, and proactive collaboration with cross-functional teams throughout the project lifecycle.

What is the difference between System Designer vs Software Engineer?

AspectSystem DesignerSoftware Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science or related field; often certifications in system architectureBachelor's in Computer Science or related field; certifications in programming or development
Work EnvironmentDesigning system architecture, collaborating with stakeholders, planning infrastructureWriting, testing, and maintaining code; implementing features based on designs
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, system integrators, consulting firmsSoftware development firms, tech startups, IT departments

While both roles require a strong technical background, System Designers focus on planning and structuring entire systems, whereas Software Engineers implement and develop software components based on those designs. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

What is the average salary of a system designer?

The average salary of a system designer varies depending on experience, location, and industry, but typically ranges from $70,000 to $120,000 annually. Senior system designers with specialized skills or certifications can earn higher salaries, especially in technology and engineering sectors.

What skills do you need to be a system designer?

A system designer needs strong technical skills in software architecture, systems analysis, and understanding of hardware and network infrastructure. Proficiency in modeling tools, programming, and knowledge of design patterns are essential, along with problem-solving abilities and effective communication skills to collaborate with development teams.

Job description

At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology.

Come be a part of what's next. The Role This role sits as a horizontal function within the Design Systems organization, a team dedicated to enabling product quality, consistency, and design velocity across all of Netflix. Hawkins Consumer, our design system, is a platform that is rapidly evolving into something bigger: the design intelligence layer that Netflix's product teams, tools, and AI agents all build from.

We're looking for a System Designer to anchor our Core system, ensuring it's precise, scalable, and legible to both the teams and AI agents building from it. That means shaping what belongs in Core, codifying visual and motion standards as reusable infrastructure, and partnering closely with domain system designers to maintain coherence across Commerce, Member, and Games. Responsibilities Maintain the Hawkins Core layer and integrate system context and components into prototyping tools.

Activate eligibility and contribution criteria to manage how domain libraries extend and graduate patterns into Core. Partner with engineering to normalize taxonomy and capabilities between design and code, prioritizing system-wide standards while balancing platform-specific constraints. Codify visual and motion standards into scalable, reusable tokens and shared motion principles that enable domains to build and adapt experiences for their specific business and platform needs.

Coordinate major releases across product domains, partnering with XD, PM, and Engineering stakeholders to align on Core direction and advocate for system health. Partner with domain system designers to centralize agentic context that Commerce, Games, and Member extend from. Ensure coherence across domains by governing documentation, interaction patterns, accessibility (WCAG 2.2 AA), and naming conventions

Collaborate with embedded system designers to streamline contribution workflows, audit adoption across Figma and codebases, and define the balance between centralization and domain autonomy. Qualifications At Netflix, all roles are expected to exemplify the values outlined in our culture. Below are some specific behaviors, experiences, and skills to be successful in this role.

5+ years of experience as a System Designer, in addition to previously working as a product designer. AI fluency: you actively use AI for system tasks like research, audits, component generation, code contribution with engineering partners, and strategic communication. You understand how agentic pipelines work and exercise sound judgment on when AI output meets the system bar.

Expert in Figma, with experience creating, maintaining, and evolving design libraries, and expertise in design systems tools and workflows (e.g., Storybook, design tokens). Experience designing for game, social, or entertainment apps with a strong foundation in platform constraints and capabilities. Strong visual interaction and motion experience applied through a system's lens

A track record of governing and contributing to design systems by defining standards, delivering impactful, scalable solutions, and driving adoption across teams and platforms. Confident in your ability to break down and solve complex problems, balancing tactical execution with system-level thinking. Recognized as a trusted partner and mentor, fostering growth and collaboration by empowering peers and cross-functional teams to adopt best practices and deliver scalable design solutions.

Comfortable navigating ambiguity while bringing clarity to challenges that span design, technology, and business needs. A passion for accessibility and inclusive design, with a commitment to ensuring all components meet industry standards. Generally, our compensation structure consists solely of an annual salary; we do not have bonuses.

You choose each year how much of your compensation you want in salary versus stock options. To determine your personal top of market compensation, we rely on market indicators and consider your specific job family, background, skills, and experience to determine your compensation in the market range. The range for this role is $260,000.00 - $400,000.00

This compensation range will vary based on location. Netflix provides comprehensive benefits including Health Plans, Mental Health support, a 401(k) Retirement Plan with employer match, Stock Option Program, Disability Programs, Health Savings and Flexible Spending Accounts, Family-forming benefits, and Life and Serious Injury Benefits. We also offer paid leave of absence programs.

Full-time hourly employees accrue 35 days annually for paid time off to be used for vacation, holidays, and sick paid time off. Full-time salaried employees are immediately entitled to flexible time off. See more details about our Benefits here.

Netflix is a unique culture and environment. Learn more here. Inclusion is a Netflix value and we strive to host a meaningful interview experience for all candidates.

If you want an accommodation/adjustment for a disability or any other reason during the hiring process, please send a request to your recruiting partner. We are an equal-opportunity employer and celebrate diversity, recognizing that diversity builds stronger teams. We approach diversity and inclusion seriously and thoughtfully.

We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, ancestry, national origin, caste, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or expression, age, disability, medical condition, pregnancy, genetic makeup, marital status, or military service. Job is open for no less than 7 days and will be removed when the position is filled.
