How much do synthesizer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 7, 2026, the average hourly pay for synthesizer in the United States is $22.32, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $19.47 and $24.76 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How does a Synthesizer typically collaborate with composers, producers, and sound engineers during a music production project?

Synthesizers work closely with composers to interpret creative vision and select or design appropriate sounds for each track. They often collaborate with producers to refine arrangements and ensure synthesized elements fit within the overall mix. Close communication with sound engineers is essential to balance electronic and acoustic sounds, troubleshoot technical issues, and achieve the desired audio quality. This teamwork requires flexibility, technical proficiency, and a good ear for blending synthesized sounds seamlessly into the final production.

What is the difference between Synthesizer vs Sound Designer?

AspectSynthesizerSound Designer
Primary RoleCreates and manipulates electronic sounds and tones using synthesizersDesigns and crafts unique sounds and audio effects for various media
Required SkillsKnowledge of synthesis methods, music theory, and electronic instrumentsSound editing, creativity, audio software proficiency
Work EnvironmentMusic studios, electronic music production, live performancesFilm, gaming, advertising, multimedia projects
Common CertificationsMusic production, electronic music courses, synthesis workshopsAudio engineering, sound design certifications

While both roles involve working with audio, a synthesizer primarily focuses on creating sounds through electronic instruments, whereas a sound designer crafts unique audio effects and soundscapes for various media. Synthesizers are often used by musicians and producers, while sound designers work across industries like film and gaming to develop immersive audio experiences.

What is a synthesizer?

A synthesizer is an electronic instrument that generates audio signals to create sounds, typically for music production. Synthesizers use various methods such as analog circuitry or digital processing to produce a wide range of tones, from imitating traditional instruments to making entirely new sounds. They can be played using a keyboard, sequencer, or other controllers and are commonly used in genres like electronic, pop, and film music. Synthesizers have been instrumental in shaping modern music since their introduction in the mid-20th century.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Synthesizer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Synthesizer (Sound Designer or Synthesist), you need a solid understanding of music theory, audio engineering, and sound synthesis techniques, often supported by formal education in music production or audio technology. Proficiency with digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Ableton Live or Logic Pro, as well as familiarity with synthesizers and sound design software, is essential. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong problem-solving skills help you craft unique sounds and collaborate effectively with artists or production teams. These abilities are crucial for producing innovative audio that enhances musical projects, films, or multimedia experiences.

Job description

A confidential, industry-leading RF/microwave manufacturer is looking for an experienced RF Amplifier Design Engineer to design, develop, and test low noise and medium power amplifiers using both discrete transistor and MMIC technologies. Youโ€™ll work across hybrid and surface-mount designs, run linear and nonlinear simulations, support production, and contribute directly to new product development. This is a hands-on engineering role with real visibility inside the organization.

What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Design, develop, and test discrete and MMIC-based low noise/medium-power amplifiers

  • Build new RF and microwave circuits, components, and products

  • Perform linear and nonlinear simulations for active and passive circuits

  • Define specs for microwave components and subassemblies

  • Support high-reliability testing and screening requirements

  • Generate design reviews, test reports, and documentation

  • Work with manufacturing teams to ensure efficient build processes

  • Estimate project schedules, track engineering labor, and support technical proposals

What You Need
  • Bachelorโ€™s in Electrical Engineering with 4+ years experience, or Masterโ€™s with 2+

  • At least 2 years designing and simulating low noise amplifiers

  • Experience designing passive RF/microwave components (couplers, dividers, attenuators)

  • Experience designing for manufacturability and managing engineering projects

  • Proficient with linear CAE tools plus exposure to nonlinear CAE

  • Hands-on lab/test experience: VNAs, noise figure analyzers, spectrum analyzers, power meters, signal generators

  • Ability to work under a microscope in a cleanroom environment

  • Familiarity with semiconductor devices like GaAs and GaN

  • Strong communication skills

  • Must be able to obtain a Secret-level security clearance

Preferred Experience
  • Familiarity with MIL-specs: MIL-PRF-38534, MIL-STD-202

  • Experience aligning and tuning fine-pitch circuits under a microscope

  • Knowledge of oscillator, synthesizer, PIN-diode, and filter design

  • System-level cascade and spur analysis

  • Proficiency with Keysight ADS, RFPro, Ansys HFSS, and EM simulation tools

  • CAD familiarity: AutoCAD, Inventor

  • Design/test experience up to 26 GHz or higher (40 GHz preferred)

  • Hybrid chip-and-wire and PCB SMT manufacturing exposure

  • Wire bonding experience
