How much do rf technologies jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 13, 2026, the average yearly pay for rf technologies in the United States is $117,680.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $97,500.00 and $139,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are RF technologies?

RF Technologies, or Radio Frequency Technologies, refer to the use of electromagnetic fields within the radio frequency spectrum (typically 3 kHz to 300 GHz) for various applications such as wireless communication, radar, and microwave systems. Professionals working with RF technologies design, develop, test, and maintain devices like antennas, transmitters, receivers, and integrated circuits that use radio waves to transmit information. These technologies are crucial in industries ranging from telecommunications and broadcasting to medical devices and defense systems.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in RF technologies, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in RF Technologies often encounter challenges such as signal interference, maintaining compliance with regulatory standards, and optimizing system performance in complex environments. These issues require a strong understanding of electromagnetic theory and practical troubleshooting skills. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, ongoing training, and staying updated on the latest industry standards help address these challenges and ensure reliable RF system deployment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an RF engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an RF Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, RF circuit design, and signal processing, often supported by a relevant degree and industry certifications. Familiarity with tools such as spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, MATLAB, and CAD software is typically required. Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with teams and troubleshoot complex issues. These skills and qualifications are crucial for designing, optimizing, and maintaining reliable wireless communication systems.

What is the difference between Rf Technologies vs Radio Frequency (RF) Technician?

AspectRf TechnologiesRadio Frequency (RF) Technician
Required CredentialsCertifications in RF systems, electronics, or related fieldsFCC licensing, technical certifications in RF and electronics
Work EnvironmentDesign, testing, and troubleshooting RF systems in labs or fieldInstalling, maintaining, and repairing RF equipment on-site or in labs
Industry UsageWireless communication, defense, aerospace, telecommunicationsTelecom companies, broadcast stations, wireless service providers

Rf Technologies refers broadly to the development and application of radio frequency systems, while a Radio Frequency (RF) Technician focuses on hands-on installation, maintenance, and repair of RF equipment. Both roles require similar certifications and work in related environments, but Rf Technologies is more design-oriented, whereas RF Technicians are more operational.

What is the role of an RF Technologies?

An RF Technologies professional designs, develops, and tests radio frequency systems used in wireless communication, radar, and broadcasting. They work with RF components, signal processing, and related tools, often requiring knowledge of electromagnetic theory and certifications in RF engineering. Their role ensures reliable wireless connectivity and system performance.

Job description

Looking for an opportunity to make an impact?
The Leidos Defense Space Business Area is seeking experienced RF Electrical Engineer to support the Emerging Space Systems Division in the development of advanced RF technologies for next-generation space missions. The Space Business Area is transforming space payload solutions for the future through both customer-funded programs and internal research and development (IR&D) efforts focused on enabling new capabilities in space-based sensing.
What You'll Do:
In this role, you will support the design, modeling, and experimental validation of electromagnetic technologies operating across the radio frequency spectrum. You will contribute to RF antenna modeling and performance analysis, assist with design trades and system-level evaluations based on laboratory measurements, and support the development of compact, high-performance payloads.
You will also play a hands-on role in laboratory activities, including prototype antenna characterization, electronics integration, testing, and characterization of components and systems. Working closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams, you will help evaluate and mature emerging RF technologies-such as RF metamaterials and electrically small antennas-analyze experimental data to inform design decisions, and document results to support internal R&D and program efforts.
This position emphasizes a balance of analytical and experimental work. The ideal candidate is comfortable working across simulation and laboratory environments and is motivated to grow technical expertise in both domains.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related field with 8+ years of prior relevant experience, or a Masters Degree with 6+ years of prior relevant experience. May possess a Doctorate in the technical domain.
  • US citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance
  • Experience with RF antenna modeling, simulation, or analysis
  • Familiarity with RF aperture performance metrics such as Rx/Tx antenna gain, effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP), radiation efficiency, noise characteristics
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment, including anechoic chamber testing or characterization
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative team environment

Preferred Qualifications
  • Active Secret clearance with ability to obtain a higher-level clearance (TS/SCI)
  • Hands-on experience with building RF testbeds for characterizing RF technologies
  • Experience with antenna design tools such as COMSOL, CST Microwave Studio, or equivalent
  • Exposure to advanced RF technologies such as RF metamaterial antennas, space-time modulation, or electrically small antennas
