Job Summary/Basic Function
Gallery Assistants serve as the first public contact for the Swope Art Museum and play a vital role in maintaining the Museum's welcoming, safe, and professional environment. Gallery Assistants are responsible for the comfort and safety of Museum patrons, the security of exhibited works of art, and providing support for the Museum's day-to-day operations.
Specific Responsibilities
Work Schedule
Gallery Assistant shifts are scheduled Tuesday through Sunday (10-15 hours per week):
  • Opening Gallery Assistant: 11:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Responsible for opening the Museum and must have a Museum key.
  • Second Gallery Assistant: 12:00-5:00 p.m.
  • First Friday: 5:00-8:00 p.m.
  • Additional Gallery Assistant: Scheduled as needed for special events.

Job Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities take place at the Swope Art Museum, 25 S 7th St, and include:
  • Perform opening and closing routines as assigned for each shift.
  • Greet, welcome, and monitor Museum visitors.
  • Help ensure the safety and security of exhibited works of art.
  • Provide a welcoming and professional experience for visitors.
  • Answer the telephone and direct calls when stationed at the front desk.
  • Assist with bulk mailings and other clerical tasks as needed.
  • Assist with setup for special events and Museum programs.
  • Maintain the general cleanliness and professional appearance of all public spaces.
  • Provide additional operational support as assigned.

Gallery Assistants are expected to represent the Swope Art Museum in a courteous, professional, and welcoming manner while helping create an enjoyable experience for all visitors. Attention to detail, dependability, good communication, and respect for the Museum's collection and public spaces are essential to the position.
