Job description

General Definition of Work Performs statutorily defined powers, duties, and responsibilities of a licensed peace officer, in addition to statutorily defined powers general duty law enforcement work to protect life and property and enforce state and local laws and ordinances to protect and serve the citizens of Swift County. Responsible to maintain order; enforce laws and ordinances; protect life and property; perform civil process; conduct investigations; teach and train; and related work. Essential Functions A.

Operates patrol vehicle and performs foot patrol for the prevention of crime and enforcement of laws and ordinances. A.1. Enforces traffic laws; issues citations for traffic violations; performs radar enforcement, DUI checks, traffic control, motorist assists, etc

A.2. Conducts and documents security checks of homes, neighborhoods, and businesses; conducts welfare checks on residents. A.3

Responds to emergency call and assists citizens with residence checks, vehicle unlocks, and motorist assists. A.4. Assistance to private entities and local/state/federal government agencies

B. Responds to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints and promotes public safety. C.

Assists with criminal investigations by preserving, recording, and presenting evidence, interviewing victims and witnesses, and testifying in court. D. Prepares and executes juvenile petitions, criminal complaints, and protective services petitions.

E. Conducts welfare checks on individuals or families for local agencies including human services. F.

Enforces DNR, Off Road Vehicle, Boat and Water, and Snowmobile laws and regulations. G. Interacts with and manages individuals who are in emotional crisis or suffering from mental illness.

H. Creates and maintains professional relationships with community members and other agencies. I.

Creates and updates a variety of reports and forms for court prosecution, other agencies, and local and state reporting. Testifies in court. J.

Serves warrants, summons, subpoenas, civil process papers and makes arrests, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints. K. Operates computer to run checks, criminal histories, missing persons checks, etc.

L. Collaborates, communicates, and works with the County Attorney and private attorneys. M.

Performs a variety of special tasks and duties such as desk officer, training officer, court security, DARE or other special assignments as qualified and assigned. N. Ensures vehicle and equipment are in proper working order; reports unsafe or non functioning equipment.

O. Performs crime prevention activities. P.

Frequently performs work along with a minimum amount of supervision and assistance. May work with partners or small teams. Q.

Responsible for felony investigations and death scene investigations. R. Serves as officer of District Court.

S. Prepares and executes juvenile petitions, CHIPS petitions, search warrants and arrest warrants. T.

Cross trained to assist in the jail and dispatch, as needed. U. Work closely with GIS department.

Additional Functions A. Attends trainings, education and meetings. B.

Additional assignments may include court security, background investigations on new employees, boat and water coordinator, data master transportable, special event security, K-9 handler, Field Training Officer, SWAT team, investigations, C-VI Drug Task Force, Instructors making sure deputies are in compliance with Use of Force, pepper spray, taser and other equipment, and certified in conducting Corner House Forensic Child Abuse investigations. C. Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.

Qualification Requirements Minimum Qualifications A. Associate degree in criminal justice or related area. B.

Possess a Type-1 Minnesota Peace Office (POST) License; or eligible to be licensed upon hire. C. Valid MN Driver's License.

D. Must continue compliance with all other statutorily mandated requirements for performing powers, duties, and responsibilities of Deputy Sheriff. E.

Continuing education is necessary to meet mandates. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Thorough knowledge of organization and office Lexipol policies, practices, procedures, departmental legal guidelines, recommendations, best practices, ordinance and laws; thorough knowledge of E charging, records management systems: thorough knowledge of Swift County through plat maps as well as all Cities and districts within the County; thorough knowledge of evidence rooms, incident reports, civil notices, juvenile detention forms, vehicle impound forms, Chain of Custody, and mobile data terminals; ability to use personal protective equipment: pepper spray, baton, semi-automatic pistol; pump shotgun and assault rifle; ability to defend self or others; ability to work rotating and/or extended shifts 24 hours/day, 7 days/week; ability to perform emergency first aid, CPR, rescue and recoveries and use AEDs; ability to provide credible testimony in court; comprehensive skill operating standard office computer equipment and applicable hardware and software; ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals; ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages; ability to establish and maintain working relationships with elected officials, associates and community members. Additional Compensation Information: On call compensation: $500 per month for full time; $1.44 per hour of on call time for part-time up to $500 Uniform Allowance: $1,050 for full time; pro-rated for part-time Shirt Differential: $1.50 per hour
