Job description

Corewell Health is seeking a dynamic, strategic and solution-oriented health system legal department leader to serve as Senior Vice President, General Counsel. Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer, Corewell Health, the Senior Vice President, General Counsel is responsible for leading the legal affairs of the Corewell Health Delivery System, including the health care operations of all Corewell Health regions, as well as Corewell Health corporate shared services serving all Corewell Health entities. This executive serves as a trusted strategic advisor to senior leadership, providing solution-oriented legal counsel that advances the organization's mission, protects its interests, and enables delivery of high-quality, integrated care in a legally compliant and risk-informed manner.
The SVP, General Counsel, leads a team of accomplished legal professionals supporting legal services needs across the Corewell Health Delivery System as well as corporate shared services supporting all Corewell Health entities, including employment law, corporate transactions, information technology, contracting and regulatory compliance. This role requires deep experience operating within a large, integrated health system and the ability to engage effectively with executive leaders, physicians, governing bodies and external partners. A key focus of this role is advising the organization on how to most effectively structure and advance collaborative, mission-driven physician relationships, including employment, affiliation and alignment models, to support clinical integration, access to care and value-based care strategies.
The SVP, General Counsel oversees complex contracting, provides legal guidance on clinical, medical staff and compliance matters, and directs litigation strategy and outside counsel management to ensure consistent, high-quality legal services across the enterprise. Frequently collaborates and partners with the SVP, General Counsel of Priority Health on strategies to most effectively serve communities with integrated health care and health insurance services and products.
This leader's primary office location is flexible and may be based in either our Grand Rapids or Southfield legal department offices with the expectation of frequent and consistent presence in both offices.
Key Role Functions and Responsibilities
  • Provides proactive legal counsel and strategic guidance to executive leadership across Corewell Health, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and risk tolerance. Ensures consistency of legal advice, contract terms and legal work product across all Corewell Health business entities. Participates in the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and enterprise-wide legal standards.
  • Drives continuous improvement in the delivery of exceptional client service across both internal and external legal resources.
  • Advises Corewell Health and System leadership on strategic transactions and initiatives, with emphasis on strategic relationships and other strategic partnerships/collaborations.
  • Leads legal advice and strategy for the development and structuring of collaborative, mission-driven physician relationships, including employment models, professional services arrangements, joint ventures and clinically integrated networks. Supports initiatives that advance physician alignment, care integration and value-based care delivery.
  • Facilitate contract legal reviews, negotiation and advice, and, for material transactions, may personally negotiate and advise.
  • Oversees litigation strategy and participates in complex legal matters.
  • Selects, directs, and evaluates outside counsel, ensuring high-quality representation and cost-effective legal services.
  • Responsible for oversight and administration of contract management for Corewell Health.
  • Provides legal advice related to credentialing, peer review, medical staff governance, and professional practice matters. Advises on employed provider issues and collaborates closely with Human Resources on employment-related legal matters. Conducts and supports internal investigations, including but not limited to medical staff and employment issues.
  • Advises senior management and governing boards on corporate governance, fiduciary responsibilities and legal risks. Oversees legal support of Board and committee activities.

Candidate Qualifications
  • 5 years of relevant in-house legal leadership experience. Required.
  • 15 years of relevant experience actively practicing health law and representing/advising health system(s), with a preference for experience in health systems that include a health plan. Strongly preferred.
  • Healthcare legal experience with physician alignment and provider relationships, including physician employment, compensation, medical group affiliations, professional services agreements and other provider contracting and alignment arrangements Preferred.

Credentials
  • Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited law school. Required.
  • License to practice law - State Bar of Michigan - licensure within 6 months of hire. Required.
