Sustainment information

What is sustainment?

Sustainment refers to the processes and activities involved in maintaining and supporting systems, equipment, or operations over their entire lifecycle. In many industries, including military, manufacturing, and technology, sustainment ensures that products or services continue to function effectively and efficiently after initial deployment. This may involve maintenance, logistics, repairs, updates, and resource management. The goal of sustainment is to maximize uptime, reduce costs, and extend the useful life of assets.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a sustainment role?

To thrive in a Sustainment role, you need expertise in logistics, supply chain management, and maintenance operations, often supported by a relevant degree or military experience. Familiarity with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, maintenance management software, and certifications such as Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) are typically valuable. Strong problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills help professionals coordinate resources and respond to evolving operational needs. These capabilities are critical for ensuring mission readiness, minimizing downtime, and optimizing the lifecycle of assets.

What are the typical challenges faced by professionals working in sustainment roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in sustainment roles often encounter challenges such as managing aging equipment, coordinating maintenance schedules, and balancing cost-effectiveness with reliability. They frequently work cross-functionally with engineering, logistics, and supply chain teams to ensure ongoing support and minimal downtime. Staying proactive with preventive maintenance and leveraging data analytics for decision-making can help address these challenges. Effective communication and adaptability are also crucial, as sustainment professionals must respond quickly to unexpected issues while ensuring long-term asset availability.

What is the difference between Sustainment vs Maintenance?

AspectSustainmentMaintenance
Primary FocusEnsuring operational readiness and long-term support of systemsPerforming repairs and upkeep to restore systems to working condition
Work EnvironmentLogistics, supply chain, and support operationsRepair shops, field service, and technical facilities
Required CredentialsCertifications in logistics, supply chain, or systems supportTechnical certifications, trade licenses, or specialized repair training

While both roles involve supporting systems, sustainment focuses on maintaining operational readiness over time through logistics and support, whereas maintenance emphasizes repairing and restoring equipment to working condition. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and employer expectations in the industry.

You will be the Sustainment / Maintainability Engineer for the Navy LEED Program. Our team creates logistics, maintainability, and sustainment solutions that keep the LEED system transportable, operable, and supportable throughout its entire life cycle.
What You Will Be Doing
As the Sustainment / Maintainability Engineer you will drive the development of Logistics Support Analysis (LSA) data and define the support equipment needed for the LEED system. Your responsibilities will include:
• Build LSA data sets that capture maintenance, supportability, and sustainment requirements for LEED.
• Identify, size, and specify all support equipment required for safe transport, operation, and maintenance.
• Conduct maintainability assessments to verify the system can be serviced and repaired efficiently in the field.
• Partner with cross functional engineering and logistics groups to weave supportability into design, development, and fielding plans.
• Develop depot level sustainment strategies, including repair concepts, maintenance schedules, and future infrastructure needs.
• Review technical data, system requirements, and support documentation to ensure alignment with program goals.
• Coordinate with internal teams and customer representatives to resolve sustainment, logistics, and maintainability issues.
• Deliver clear technical inputs, status updates, and actionable recommendations on logistics support and depot planning.
