What does a sustainability project manager do?

A Sustainability Project Manager oversees projects aimed at improving environmental, social, and economic sustainability within an organization or community. Their responsibilities include planning, implementing, and monitoring sustainability initiatives, such as reducing energy consumption, managing waste, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. They collaborate with stakeholders, set sustainability goals, and measure the outcomes of their projects. The role often requires knowledge of environmental science, project management, and effective communication skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sustainability project manager?

To thrive as a Sustainability Project Manager, you need expertise in project management, environmental science, and sustainability best practices, often supported by a relevant degree or PMP/LEED certification. Familiarity with project management tools such as MS Project, sustainability reporting platforms, and data analytics software is essential. Communication and collaboration are key, since different teams may have varying levels of understanding and commitment to sustainability practices.
