What is a sustainability consulting internship?

A Sustainability Consulting Internship is a temporary position where students or recent graduates work with consulting firms or organizations to help businesses develop and implement environmentally responsible and sustainable practices. Interns typically assist with research, data analysis, sustainability reporting, and the creation of strategies to reduce environmental impact. The internship provides practical experience in sustainability consulting, exposure to real-world projects, and networking opportunities within the industry. It is ideal for individuals interested in environmental science, business, or policy who want to build careers in sustainability.

What types of projects do sustainability consulting interns typically work on, and how do they contribute to client solutions?

Sustainability Consulting Interns are often involved in projects such as environmental impact assessments, sustainability reporting, data analysis for carbon footprint calculations, and supporting the development of client sustainability strategies. Interns collaborate closely with experienced consultants, research regulations and best practices, and help prepare presentations or deliverables for clients. This hands-on experience allows interns to see the direct impact of their work on real-world sustainability solutions, while developing skills that are highly valued in the consulting industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sustainability consulting intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sustainability Consulting Intern, you need a solid grounding in environmental science, sustainability principles, and analytical skills, often supported by coursework or a degree in a related field. Familiarity with data analysis tools (like Excel or Tableau), sustainability reporting frameworks (such as GRI or CDP), and research software is valuable. Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities help you convey complex ideas and collaborate with clients or project teams. These competencies are essential for delivering impactful sustainability solutions and supporting clients in achieving their environmental goals.
