Sustain Engineer information

What are Sustain Engineers?

Sustain Engineers are professionals responsible for maintaining, supporting, and improving existing products, systems, or infrastructures after their initial release. Their main focus is to ensure that products continue to function reliably and efficiently by addressing defects, implementing updates, and making incremental improvements. They often collaborate with development, operations, and quality assurance teams to troubleshoot issues, enhance performance, and extend product lifecycles. Sustain Engineers play a crucial role in minimizing downtime and ensuring customer satisfaction through ongoing support and optimization.

What is the difference between Sustain Engineer vs Environmental Engineer?

AspectSustain EngineerEnvironmental Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in engineering, sustainability certificationsBachelor's in environmental engineering, environmental certifications
Work EnvironmentDesigning sustainable systems, renewable energy projectsEnvironmental impact assessments, pollution control
Industry UsageRenewable energy, manufacturing, constructionGovernment agencies, consulting firms, industry

Both Sustain Engineers and Environmental Engineers focus on sustainability and environmental impact, but Sustain Engineers primarily develop sustainable systems and energy solutions, while Environmental Engineers focus on environmental protection and pollution control. The roles often overlap in industry and credentials, but their core responsibilities differ based on project focus.

What are some typical challenges a Sustain Engineer faces when supporting existing products or systems?

As a Sustain Engineer, one of the primary challenges is troubleshooting complex, existing systems where documentation may be incomplete or out of date. You'll often need to quickly identify the root cause of issues reported by customers or internal teams and implement solutions with minimal disruption. Balancing urgent bug fixes with longer-term improvements, while coordinating with cross-functional teams like development, QA, and customer support, is a key part of the role. Strong communication and problem-solving skills are essential to succeed in this fast-paced, reactive environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sustain Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sustain Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis, typically with a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with technical tools such as CAD software, failure analysis tools, and maintenance management systems, as well as certifications like Six Sigma or Lean, is often required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help sustain engineers excel when addressing ongoing product or process issues. These skills are crucial for minimizing downtime, enhancing product reliability, and ensuring operational efficiency.

Job description

Overview
Integrated Business Planning (IBP) & Magic Triangle (MGT) Sustain Operations - North America & Rest of World (ROW) is accountable for the end-to-end operational stability, control, and governance of Integrated Business Planning (IBP / o9) and MGT production integrations (SAP, Mosaic, TPM) primarily across North America and rest of the world solutions. Primary focus is on the MDG pipeline and MGT platform data integrations from source to target. This role owns the IT Service Management (ITSM) control plane for NA IBP and MGT, ensuring incidents are responded to, triaged effectively and within SLA, risks are proactively managed, changes are governed, and business impact is clearly communicated and minimized. The role partners closely with Data Product, Integration, and external Sustain teams, while maintaining clear separation of accountability between build, data ownership, data quality, and operational governance. Provide hands-on IBP Sustain expertise to stabilize and remediate forecast integration issues (95 vs 97) and batch job monitoring/triage, while ensuring knowledge is transferable into long-term Sustain operations. This role is positioned to reduce criticality risk in IBP Sustain, not to own a single project deliverable.
Responsibilities
1. ITSM Ownership & Operational Governance
  • Own the incident, problem, and escalation lifecycle for North America IBP and MGT production environments
  • Act as the single operational authority during Sev 1 and Sev 2 incidents, including war room leadership and decision making
  • Ensure timely escalation, executive communications, and post-incident root cause analysis, including clear ownership of corrective actions
  • Define, track, and govern operational KPIs, SLAs, service health, and forecast stability metrics
  • Maintain and enforce sustain runbooks, SOPs, batch operating procedures, and escalation frameworks, ensuring readiness across all IBP operational scenarios

2. End-to-End Triage & Business Impact Management
Forecast Integration: 95 vs 97
  • Act as a subject matter expert for Forecast Integration 95 vs 97, including upstream and downstream dependency awareness
  • Lead root cause analysis, stabilization, and remediation of mismatches between forecast versions
  • Partner with Product, Data, Planning, and Integration teams to resolve structural integration gaps and prevent recurrence
  • Ensure forecast discrepancies are clearly translated into business impact, risk, and decision context during operational events

Operational Triage & Incident Management
  • Lead end-to-end triage across data pipelines, integration layers, batch execution, and downstream consumption (o9, SAP IBP, reporting)
  • Own batch jobs monitoring, failure triage, and escalation, including overnight and weekend execution models
  • Provide clear business impact assessments during incidents, delays, or data degradation
  • Ensure repeat issues transition from incident to problem management, with permanent corrective actions
  • Drive cross-functional alignment across technical and business stakeholders during operational events

3. Change, Release & Risk Governance
Serve as the North America Sustain gatekeeper for:
  • Change Requests (CRs)
  • Releases, hotfixes, and planned outages

Validate production readiness in partnership with Data Product, Integration, and Engineering leads
  • Ensure changes align with IBP business calendars (S&OE, S&OP, finance cycles)
  • Govern weekend and after-hours execution, including batch-heavy changes, to minimize business and forecast risk
  • Actively assess and mitigate sustain criticality risks arising from complex integrations and forecast dependencies

4. Operational Excellence & Continuous Improvement
  • Drive reduction of manual monitoring through automation, alerting, and standardization
  • Identify systemic operational risks, recurring failure patterns, and forecast instability drivers
  • Ensure sustain knowledge is documented, transferable, and scalable - not person-dependent
  • Actively support the transition of complex IBP knowledge (forecast logic, batch behavior, integration nuances) into long-term Sustain ownership
  • Provide operational insights, trend analysis, and risk visibility to senior leadership

Partnership Model & Ways of Working
This role succeeds through strong partnership with clear accountability boundaries:
  • IBP Sustain Data Product Management (DPM)
  • Partners on data validation, reconciliation, and root cause analysis, while this role owns escalation, business impact assessment, and problem management governance.

IBP Integration Lead
  • Partners on batch orchestration, runtime optimization, and continuity planning, while this role governs risk acceptance, escalation decisions, and operational readiness.

CSM / L1 / L2 Sustain Teams
  • Ensures L1/L2 teams operate independently through strong runbooks, escalation thresholds, and batch procedures, engaging senior resources only for true exceptions.

RACI Overview (Summary)
Accountable:
  • ITSM ownership, major incidents, escalation decisions, operational readiness, forecast stability, sustain governance

Responsible (via partners):
  • Data diagnosis (DPM), batch execution and continuity (Integration), monitoring and first response (L1/L2)

Consulted:
  • Product, Engineering, IBP Process, Planning, Business stakeholders

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Bonus based on performance and eligibility target payout is 15% of annual salary paid out annually.
  • Paid time off subject to eligibility, including paid parental leave, vacation, sick, and bereavement.

  • Experience supporting IBP, planning, analytics, or supply-chain platforms
  • Experience operating in a matrixed, global enterprise environment
  • Demonstrated success driving operational maturity, observability and automation to prevent risk or incidents

Experience:
