Surveyor Draftsman information

What is a surveyor draftsman?

Surveyor Draftsmen are professionals who prepare detailed maps, drawings, and plans used in construction, land development, and engineering projects. They work closely with surveyors and engineers to translate field measurements and survey data into technical drawings using computer-aided design (CAD) software. Their work ensures that projects are accurately planned and executed according to legal and technical standards. Surveyor Draftsmen play a vital role in documenting property boundaries, topographic features, and site layouts for various development projects.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a surveyor draftsman?

To thrive as a Surveyor Draftsman, you need strong skills in technical drawing, land surveying principles, and a relevant qualification such as a diploma or degree in civil engineering or surveying. Proficiency with CAD software (such as AutoCAD), GIS systems, and survey instruments is typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication help you deliver accurate drawings and collaborate with engineers and surveyors. These skills ensure precise project documentation, efficient workflows, and compliance with industry standards.

How does a surveyor draftsman collaborate with surveyors and engineers during a project?

A Surveyor Draftsman works closely with both field surveyors and engineers to transform collected survey data into precise technical drawings and maps. Collaboration often involves regular communication to clarify measurements, resolve discrepancies, and ensure that the drawings accurately reflect site conditions and project requirements. Draftsmen may attend project meetings, review field notes, and incorporate feedback from engineers to update plans as the project progresses. This teamwork is essential for delivering clear and reliable documents used throughout the planning and construction phases.

    • Topographic Surveys
    • Various Exhibits
  • Collaborate with project managers, professional surveyors, and team leaders to evaluate project scope, schedule, budget, and instructions.
  • Coordinate daily activities for at least one field crew and/or survey technician.
  • Process and verify survey data using Excel, Trimble Business Center, and other survey programs.
  • Conduct research on deeds, maps, and prior surveys; perform boundary analysis and determinations.
  • Maintain exceptional relationships with internal teams and external clients.
  • Organize and maintain project drawings, plot files, and related documentation.
  • Prepare Job Hazard Analyses (JHA) for projects prior to initiation.
  • Apply boundary law principles based on state and nation rules and regulatory standards to ensure survey accuracy.
  • Contribute to team success with an 85% utilization target.

Qualifications that make you a perfect fit.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum 2 years relevant technical education or on-the-job experience in land surveying.
  • Associate degree in land surveying technology preferred.
  • Field surveying experience is desirable but not mandatory.
  • Proficiency in Trimble Business Center, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), and AutoDesk Civil 3D.
  • Strong understanding of land surveying practices, procedures, and state standards of practice.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong communication skills with both internal and external clients.
