Job Summary

The Heavy Civil Construction Surveyor is responsible for providing accurate surveying, layout, and verification services to support large-scale civil construction projects. This role ensures that all construction activities conform to project plans, specifications, and established tolerances. The Surveyor works closely with project managers, engineers, superintendents, and field crews to maintain quality, safety, and efficiency throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

Surveying & Layout

  • Perform construction layout for roads, bridges, utilities, earthwork, drainage, and structures
  • Set and verify control points, benchmarks, alignments, grades, and offsets
  • Perform as-built surveys to document completed work
  • Verify line, grade, and elevation prior to and during construction

Field Operations

  • Operate surveying equipment including GPS, total stations, robotic stations, and data collectors
  • Maintain, calibrate, and safeguard survey equipment
  • Troubleshoot field discrepancies and resolve layout conflicts in real time
  • Support excavation, grading, paving, and structural placement activities

Office & Technical Duties

  • Interpret construction plans, specifications, and design drawings
  • Prepare survey data, field notes, and reports
  • Upload, download, and manage survey data using CAD and surveying software
  • Assist with quantity calculations and progress verification when required

Coordination & Communication

  • Coordinate with engineers and project management to clarify design intent
  • Communicate layout requirements to field crews and subcontractors
  • Identify and report potential design conflicts, errors, or field issues
  • Support quality control and compliance with project specifications

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all company safety policies and site-specific safety plans
  • Maintain compliance with OSHA and site safety requirements
  • Promote safe survey practices in active construction environments

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (Associate or Bachelor's degree in Surveying, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred)
  • Minimum2-5 yearsof surveying experience inheavy civil construction
  • Proficiency with GPS and total station survey equipment
  • Strong understanding of civil construction methods, plans, and tolerances
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications
  • Valid driver's license and ability to work outdoors in varying conditions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Licensed or certified Surveyor (LS, LSIT, or equivalent)
  • Experience with roadway, bridge, utility, or large-scale earthwork projects
  • Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or similar)
  • Experience with machine control and digital terrain models (DTMs)
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Ability to walk uneven terrain and active construction sites
  • Ability to lift and carry surveying equipment (up to ~50 lbs)
  • Willingness to work extended hours or weekends as project schedules require

Reporting Structure

  • Reports to:Director of Operations and Lead Surveyor
  • Works closely with: Superintendents, Engineers, Field Crews, and Subcontractors
