What Is a Survey Rodman?

A survey rodman transports and sets up the equipment necessary to survey land and prepare a job site. The rodman also loads vehicles before heading out to the construction site. Your responsibilities in this career include marking the legal boundaries of a job site, cleaning out the area of trees or debris, and setting up the necessary measuring instrument. You hold the prism pole so the surveyor can determine elevation at different points along the site. Other duties include creating a map of the construction site and using GPS or other technology to help the surveyor.

Survey Rodmen often encounter challenging outdoor conditions such as rough terrain, extreme weather, and long hours on their feet. They may also need to carry and set up heavy equipment precisely, sometimes in remote or busy construction sites. To prepare, it's helpful to wear appropriate clothing and safety gear, develop good physical stamina, and maintain clear communication with the survey crew to ensure accurate data collection and safety. Familiarity with the operation and maintenance of surveying tools can also help minimize on-site issues.

What are survey rodmen?

Survey rodmen are entry-level members of a land surveying crew responsible for holding and positioning the survey rod or pole, which is used as a reference point for measurements. They assist surveyors and instrument operators by marking locations, measuring distances, and recording data in the field. This role often involves physical work outdoors, carrying equipment, and ensuring accurate placement for precise survey results. Survey rodmen play a crucial role in construction, engineering, and land development projects by helping collect the data needed for mapping and planning.
