What is a surgical technologist internship?

A Surgical Technologist Internship is a supervised, hands-on training program for students or recent graduates pursuing a career as surgical technologists. During the internship, participants work alongside experienced surgical teams in operating rooms to gain practical skills, such as sterilizing instruments, preparing operating rooms, and assisting during surgeries. This experience helps interns apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings, develop technical proficiency, and build confidence in their role. The internship is often a required component of surgical technology programs and may lead to job opportunities upon successful completion.

What responsibilities can I expect during a surgical technologist internship?

As a Surgical Technologist Intern, you'll typically be responsible for preparing operating rooms, sterilizing instruments, and ensuring all necessary equipment is ready for surgical procedures. You will work closely with surgeons, registered nurses, and anesthesiologists, assisting with tasks such as passing instruments and supplies during surgery. Interns often observe complex procedures and may gradually take on more hands-on duties as they gain experience. Collaboration and effective communication are essential, as you'll be an integral part of the surgical team, learning to anticipate the needs of others and maintaining a sterile environment.

What skills and qualifications are needed for a surgical technologist internship?
