What is a surgical LPN?

A Surgical LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) is a healthcare professional who assists surgeons, registered nurses, and other medical staff during surgical procedures. They prepare patients for surgery, manage surgical instruments, monitor vital signs, and provide post-operative care. Their responsibilities may also include maintaining sterile environments and assisting in wound care. Surgical LPNs typically work in hospitals, outpatient surgery centers, or specialized surgical units.

What are the typical duties of a surgical LPN during a surgical procedure?

As a Surgical LPN, your primary responsibilities during surgical procedures include preparing and maintaining the sterile field, assisting with patient positioning, passing instruments to surgeons, and monitoring patients’ vital signs. You will also be involved in pre-operative preparations and post-operative care, ensuring patients are comfortable and following required protocols. Surgical LPNs often work closely with registered nurses, surgeons, and anesthesiologists to facilitate a smooth and safe surgical experience. This hands-on role requires quick thinking, diligence, and strong teamwork skills to adapt to the fast-paced surgical environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the surgical LPN position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Surgical LPN, you need a solid understanding of sterile techniques, basic surgical procedures, and patient care, typically supported by a practical nursing diploma and LPN licensure. Familiarity with surgical instruments, electronic medical records (EMR) systems, and infection control protocols is essential. Attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication skills are crucial soft skills for this role. These abilities ensure seamless surgical workflows, patient safety, and effective support for surgical teams in high-stress environments.
