Job description

About the Role
Medworks is seeking a Certified Surgical First Assistant to support surgical procedures across hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers in the greater Richmond, VA area.
This is a mobile, field-based role requiring travel between healthcare facilities. The Surgical Assistant works directly with surgeons and clinical teams, providing hands-on intraoperative support to ensure safe and efficient patient care.
Responsibilities
Pre-Operative
  • Prepare operating rooms with sterile instruments, equipment, and supplies
  • Assist with patient positioning and surgical site preparation

Intra-Operative
  • Provide direct assistance to surgeons, including retracting, suturing, and cauterizing
  • Maintain a sterile field and adhere to aseptic technique standards
  • Anticipate the surgeon's needs and support efficient workflow
  • Operate and support specialty surgical equipment, including lasers

Post-Operative
  • Assist with room turnover, cleaning, and restocking
  • Complete procedural documentation and track equipment usage

Required Qualifications
  • Active certification as one of the following:
    • Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA)
    • Certified First Assistant (CFA)
    • Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA)
    • Surgical Assistant-Certified (SA-C)
  • Knowledge of surgical procedures, instrumentation, and sterile technique
  • Ability to work effectively in fast-paced clinical environments
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Reliable transportation and ability to travel between facilities

Preferred Qualifications
  • 1+ year of surgical assistant experience
  • Experience in urology, gynecology, or general surgery
  • Experience in hospital or ambulatory surgery settings

Schedule & Travel
  • Monday-Friday schedule based on surgical case volume
  • Occasional early start times, extended days, and on-call rotation
  • Frequent local travel within the Richmond area
  • Periodic travel outside the region may be required

  • Salary Range: $93,500 - $102,200
